Acid reflux, a common issue these days, can be caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. But worry not, as we present a yoga stretch that promises instant relief, as suggested by yoga practitioner Shalu Chaudhary.

Taking to Instagram, Chaudhary noted, “Acid reflux? Do this daily for 5 minutes. Please avoid sugar and junk foods,” while demonstrating how to perform Supta Baddha Konasana, or Reclined Bound Angle Pose, with deep breathing.

According to Chaudhary, the restorative yoga pose can help one relax and relieve acid reflux.

Generally, it is suggested to avoid lying down or going to bed immediately after meals. “Lying down can contribute to acid reflux, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn. To prevent this, it is advisable to wait at least two to three hours before lying down after a meal. This allows sufficient time for the digestive process to progress,” said Dr Sri Karan Uddesh Tanugula, consultant general physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Dr Nadendla Hazarthaiah, consultant surgical gastroenterologist, GI oncology, HPB and bariatric surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgeon, agreed that the posture can potentially help alleviate symptoms of acid reflux, but it’s important to “approach this with caution and a holistic perspective.”

“Acid reflux, caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus, often worsens with poor posture and increased abdominal pressure. Supta Baddha Konasana encourages relaxation, reduces stress, and helps in improving digestion by promoting diaphragmatic breathing,” said Dr Hazarthaiah.

Practicing this pose may aid in calming the nervous system, which can indirectly benefit those with acid reflux, as stress is known to exacerbate digestive issues. “Additionally, the gentle stretch in the abdomen might relieve pressure from the stomach, reducing the likelihood of acid moving upward. However, it is crucial to ensure that this pose is performed with proper support under the back and head to avoid aggravating the condition,” said Dr Hazarthaiah.

While yoga can be beneficial, Supta Baddha Konasana alone is unlikely to be a complete remedy for acid reflux, he emphasised. “Even late-night heavy meals or even snacking may lead to reflux issues. Patients are advised to combine such practices with lifestyle modifications like maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding trigger foods. Consulting a healthcare professional for a comprehensive approach to managing acid reflux is advised,” said Dr Hazarthaiah.
