Mumbai: Former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday demanded that the state government make public the detailed project report (DPR) for the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Simhastha Kumbh Mela, for which nearly Rs 35,000 crore has been sanctioned.

Addressing a press conference, Chavan said the Congress was not opposed to spending public money on the major religious and cultural event, but stressed that the government must ensure complete transparency in its utilisation.

He sought details of all works planned for the Kumbh, scheduled from October 31, 2026 to July 24, 2028, along with the agencies and contractors selected, the procedure followed for awarding works and the proposed expenditure.

Chavan also questioned the appointment of a separate Kumbh Mela minister and sought details of the ministry under which the appointment was made and the administrative procedure followed. He demanded that an environmental and social impact assessment of the projects also be prepared and made public.

He pointed out that previous Congress governments had allocated funds for the Kumbh, mainly for creating civic infrastructure and amenities. However, the proposed Rs 35,000-crore expenditure was several times higher than allocations for earlier events and therefore required greater scrutiny, he said.

Chavan also demanded an independent Special Investigation Team probe into deaths allegedly linked to pothole-ridden and poorly maintained roads in Nashik. He said a ring road was necessary for the city but its proposed alignment and plan should be made public before being finalised.

On politics, Chavan appealed to NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar not to join hands with the BJP and to remain with the NCP.

He also claimed that a proposal to form an alliance of the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP had emerged as early as December 2014, but the Congress had rejected it at the time.
