Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licences/registration certificates of six food establishments in Mumbai, including the prestigious Bombay Presidency Radio Club in Colaba and Khar Gymkhana, after inspections found serious violations of food safety and hygiene norms. The action also covers a McDonald’s outlet in Colaba, Novaara in Malad, Status Restaurant at Nariman Point and Bajrang Sweet Mart in Santacruz West.

Inspections Reveal Pest Infestation, Poor Storage And Hygiene Lapses

The FDA action, taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, follows inspections conducted on August 19 and 20 that exposed a range of deficiencies, including pest infestation, poor hygiene, cross-contamination risks, improper food storage and inadequate temperature controls.

At the Bombay Presidency Radio Club, an August 19 inspection found active fly infestation in kitchen areas, a dead cockroach and cockroach traps near utensil-washing areas. Flaking ceiling plaster was found directly over food preparation areas, while washing powder and chemicals were stored alongside food. Utensils and food were also kept directly on the floor, with the establishment recording a 47% non-compliance rate. The FDA suspended its food business licence with immediate effect and ordered it to stop food purchase, sale and distribution during the suspension period.

Khar Gymkhana Faces Action Over Storage And Food Handling Issues

At Khar Gymkhana, inspectors found inadequate storage facilities, poor cleanliness of the food preparation area, lack of segregation between raw and cooked as well as vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, improper equipment sanitisation and absence of hot water for washing utensils. The establishment was also not following FIFO/FEFO systems, regular oil-quality checks and prescribed temperature-control practices. Its FSSAI registration certificate was suspended and it was prohibited from storing, manufacturing, purchasing, selling or distributing food products.

The FDA also suspended the licence of a McDonald’s kiosk at Metro House, Colaba, after a reinspection found that 18 of 20 deficiencies pointed out earlier remained unresolved. Inspectors reported cockroach activity, rotting food waste, uncalibrated refrigeration equipment and poor hygiene practices. The FDA also alleged that a compliance report submitted by the outlet claimed rectification of deficiencies that were subsequently found to remain unaddressed.

Novaara Malad Faces Action Over Unresolved Improvement Notice Violations

At Ingenious Kitchens Pvt Ltd (Novaara), Malad, 14 of 25 serious deficiencies identified in an earlier improvement notice remained unrectified during an August 13 reinspection. The FDA cited continued use of old cooking equipment, absence of grease and cockroach traps, missing medical examination records of food handlers and lack of mandatory FoSTaC training certificates.

Meanwhile, Status Restaurant at Nariman Point faced action following a consumer complaint. An August 20 inspection found poor personal hygiene, dirty utensils, water stagnation, heavy grease deposits, inadequate temperature monitoring and improper segregation of raw, cooked, vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Its food licence was suspended with immediate effect.

The FDA also initiated action against Bajrang Sweet Mart, Santacruz West, which scored only 40 out of 86 points, or 47%, during inspection. Among the deficiencies were damaged flooring, peeling plaster, rusted equipment, inadequate storage, lack of food-testing records and improper segregation of food.

The FDA has directed the establishments whose licences have been suspended to stop food-related operations during the suspension period, warning that continuing business without a valid licence would invite stringent action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
