PM Modi calls SRCC alumni ‘OGs’, felicitated at centenary event after Metro ride
    Synopsis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended Shri Ram College of Commerce's centenary celebrations in Delhi. He praised the institution's alumni as the "OGs" of leadership in contemporary terms. The Prime Minister traveled by Delhi Metro and interacted with students during his journey. He released a commemorative ₹100 coin marking the college's 100th anniversary. The event coincided with the national Teachers' Day celebration on September 5.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) for shaping generations of students and leaders, calling its alumni the “OGs” as he addressed the college’s centenary celebrations in Delhi.

“For over 100 years, Shri Ram College of Commerce has given generations of students the opportunity to learn, grow, make a difference,” Modi said.

Modi also highlighted India’s 7.8% GDP growth, saying the expansion amid global uncertainty reflected the strength of the Indian economy. India recorded 7.8% real GDP growth in the April-June quarter of 2026-27, according to the latest government estimates.

“When a person lives for 100 years, they are considered an ocean of experience. And when an institution completes 100 years, it becomes an ocean of achievements and inspiration,” he said.

“In its 100-year journey, SRCC has shaped generations and connected them with a brighter future. Those who came here studied, and those who left emerged as well-shaped individuals,” Modi added.

The Prime Minister also praised SRCC alumni for taking the college’s name to the global stage and making their mark across fields.

“The alumni of SRCC have also been very special. In your language, I would say the alumni here are the OGs,” Modi said.

“Dhurandhar na ho, lekin dhoom toh machayi hai,” he said, adding that SRCC alumni had made their mark in every sphere, from economics and politics to the arts, law and judiciary.

Modi specifically recalled former Union minister Arun Jaitley, an SRCC alumnus, and said Jaitley would often recount incidents from his college days. He also mentioned Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of his team and an SRCC alumnus.

“Even today, when someone at Delhi University asks which college you are from, saying ‘SRCC’ speaks for itself. Simply saying ‘SRCC’ is a flex in itself,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister travelled to the North Delhi campus by Delhi Metro, interacting with students and fellow passengers during the journey. He was felicitated by the college authorities and presented with a commemorative framed memento after the lighting of the lamp.

Modi also released a commemorative ₹100 coin to mark SRCC’s centenary.

The Prime Minister also referred to his 2013 address at SRCC, saying the speech and the gathering continued to be discussed and revisited even 13-14 years later.

“People have remembered it, listened to it again, and read it again. It is possible that members of the new generation have also revisited it,” he said, adding that the address had “created a wave”.

The celebrations coincided with Teachers’ Day, September 5, adding significance to the centenary of an institution that has nurtured generations of scholars, professionals, entrepreneurs, administrators and policymakers.

Established in 1926 by industrialist and philanthropist Sir Shri Ram, SRCC is among the University of Delhi’s premier institutions for commerce, economics and management.

Modi’s visit comes 13 years after he last visited SRCC in 2013, when he was chief minister of Gujarat. In April this year, he met the college’s governing body and a delegation at his residence to mark its 100th anniversary and released a commemorative postage stamp.
