Push Russia towards peace

It is disquieting that inspite of appeals, proddings including warnings by a raft of global leaders and organisations, there is no indication on the part of the Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the hostilities against Ukraine that have entered the fifth year. (Inside pages, October 4). The relentless aerial attacks by Russia have caused colossal destruction. Before the situation spins out of control, it is incumbent upon the key countries which profess supremacy in warfare to step up various forms of pressure on Russia to end the war.

Singeetham Srinivasa Rao

In the passing of Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, Indian cinema has lost a legendary director who envisioned concepts far ahead of his time. With extraordinary command of various crafts, he created unique and pathbreaking films.

His landmark projects inspired a generation of film-makers. Indian cinema has also lost a celluloid innovator who explored almost every genre with limited resources.

Safe travel, shared responsibility

A highway is more than just a road. It connects people, families and destinations. Every day, thousands travel on national highways hoping to reach their destinations safely. Yet, one careless decision can change everything. Many accidents are caused not by the road itself but by human negligence — overspeeding, careless driving, using mobile phones, ignoring traffic signals or driving under the influence of alcohol. These are not merely traffic violations; they can put lives at risk. Traffic rules are not meant to restrict us; they are meant to protect us. Speed limits give drivers time to react. Seat belts can reduce injuries in collisions, while helmets can protect riders from serious injury. Staying in one’s lane and maintaining a safe distance give everyone on the road a better chance of travelling safely. A mobile phone can wait. A message can wait. A call can wait. Life cannot. Pedestrians also have a responsibility. Roads should be crossed only at safe and designated places, while drivers must remain alert and respect pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. Imagine a highway where every driver follows the rules, every rider wears a helmet, every passenger wears a seat belt, and everyone respects the safety of others. Such a highway would not simply be safer; it would be a place where responsibility travels faster than speed. We all share the same roads and, therefore, the responsibility of keeping them safe. Safe travel is not just a right; it is a responsibility. Follow the rules, respect every life and reach safely.
