  Andhra Pradesh’s Southwest Monsoon rainfall deficit has come down from 43% on September 15 to 22% on September 25, after the deep depression brought heavy rain to the coast on September 23 and 24, the IMD’s data show. Until mid-September only Meghalaya and Manipur were drier than the State.

  Visakhapatnam district, 53.2% short on September 21, is now 3.6% short after 291.9 mm in five days, and every north coastal district has narrowed its gap.

  Odisha starts evacuating people as rivers swell due to heavy rain, Hirakud Dam opens 16 gates

  The Odisha government today started shifting people in low-lying areas to safety as all rivers in the state have swelled due to heavy rainfall over the past few days, and the Hirakud Dam has opened 16 gates to release excess water into the Mahanadi, officials said.

  Flash floods have been reported from Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Keonjhar and Jagatsinghpur districts.

  In Balasore alone, 14,660 people in 91 villages were affected as rivers flowing in spate inundated vast swathes of land. An official said 3,268 people have been removed from these areas.

  According to officials at the Water Resources Department, 11 more gates of the Hirakud Dam had to be opened today to release excess water from the reservoir. A total of 16 sluice gates have been opened, they said.

  The Jalaka river was flowing at 6.78 m, against the danger level of 6.5 m at Mathani in Basta. Known as Balasore’s “sorrow”, the Subarnarekha river was also showing a rising trend, with water level at Rajghat in Jaleswar reaching 10.35 m against its danger level of 10.36 m.

  Experts forecast that the water level could reach 11.74 m on Sunday (September 27, 2026).

  The Budhabalanga river has also crossed its danger level of 8.13 metres at Govindpur NH-16 and is currently flowing at 8.64 metres.

  Smaller rivers like Kansabansa, Soa and Gangahar are also in spate in Balasore, officials said.

  In Jajpur, the overflowing Kani river, a branch of the Baitarani river, inundated Tarapada and Kapasi panchayats in Dasarathpur block.

  Five gates of the Indravati project on the Hati river in Kalahandi district have been opened, discharging 550 cusec of water since Thursday night and flooding several blocks.

  In Koraput, five panchayats in Kotpad block were inundated, while over 100 houses were damaged.

  Recurring landslides threaten to render West Sikkim village uninhabitable

  Recurring landslides since August, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, may have severely destabilised the ground beneath Rimbi village in West Sikkim and rendered the area uninhabitable, the State’s disaster relief commissioner has said.

  A massive landslide on Thursday (September 24, 2026) night in the Singlitam-Rimbi belt in Gyalshing district deposited a massive amount of debris and destroyed more than 30 houses, forcing families to move hearth and home.

  The disaster relief commissioner, Rinzing Chewang, who surveyed the affected areas on Friday, said, “Rimbi may be uninhabitable after the recurring landslides from Singlitam. We have shifted the locals to the Gram Prasasan Kendra, with 107 people currently accommodated at the relief camp.”

  “Nine houses in Singlitam have also been evacuated,” he said. “A geological survey will be conducted after the monsoon to study the landslide and its causes through a multidisciplinary assessment involving various departments.”

  Families who lost houses will receive ₹1.3 lakh each, an official said.

  Under the Sikkim Housing Scheme, families who have lost their land will be provided land along with a house, while those who still have land will be supported in constructing new houses, officials said.

  Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has expressed concern over the situation in Rimbi, saying the safety and well-being of the affected residents were the government’s top priority.

  He appealed to people in the affected area to remain vigilant amid the torrential rain, follow advisories issued by authorities and extend support to one another.

  The system is likely to remain a depression while moving towards southeast Uttar Pradesh till Saturday (September 26, 2026) evening and subsequently weaken gradually into a well-marked low-pressure area during the following 12 hours, the IMD said.

  Vehicle movement restricted on Sikkim's lifeline NH-10 amid heavy rain

  The movement of all vehicles on a 52 km stretch of NH-10, considered Sikkim’s lifeline, was restricted for six hours on Saturday (September 26, 2026) in view of safety concerns, amid heavy rainfall in the sub-Himalayan region, an official statement said.

  The vehicle movement restriction between Sevoke and Rangpo began at 6 a.m. and would continue till noon, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) said.

  “Due to safety concerns arising out of heavy rainfall along the National Highway-10 stretch from Sevoke to Rangpo, movement of all vehicles shall be restricted,” the NHIDCL said on Friday night.

  The agency said traffic regulations may be arranged by the district administrations.

  The order has been issued by the Project Monitoring Unit (PMU)-Siliguri of NHIDCL and circulated to district administrations and police authorities in West Bengal’s Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri and in Sikkim, besides other agencies concerned.

  The police authorities have also been requested to deploy personnel to regulate traffic near vulnerable locations along the highway.

  Chhattisgarh govt declares school holiday amid heavy rain, flood-like situation

  The Chhattisgarh government has declared a holiday for schools across the State on Saturday (September 26, 2026) as heavy rains battered parts of the State, inundating several areas and cutting off villages.

  Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, in a post on ‘X’ on Friday (September 25, 2026), announced closure of all government, private and aided schools, stating that the safety of students is the top priority.

  Mr. Sai said heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging, rising water levels in rivers and streams and transportation difficulties in several areas, and the decision was taken to ensure that children don’t face any risk.

  He also instructed district collectors to conduct relief and rescue operations with full vigilance in view of flooding and waterlogging caused by continuous rainfall, including in the Bastar division which comprises seven districts, another statement said.

  Incessant heavy rains pounded several parts of the State on Friday (September 25, 2026), inundating low-lying areas, swelling rivers and cutting off remote settlements in the Bastar region.

  Rain fury in Odisha triggers flood fear; schools closed, over 14,000 people evacuated

  A deep depression lashed Odisha with heavy rain on Friday (September 25, 2026), with at least 63 places recording over 100 mm of rainfall and three over 300 mm, forcing authorities to close schools in some districts as rivers swelled, landslides occurred, big trees got uprooted, more areas waterlogged and houses damaged.

  Around 14,500 people living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas in the southern and western regions of the coastal state have been shifted to 2,061 relief centres where cooked food is being served, while pregnant women were shifted to hospitals, a Minister said.

  The deep depression that made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast a day ago entered Odisha, causing heavy to very heavy rain in 24 hours until 8.30 a.m. on Friday (September 25, 2026).

  Tentulikhunti in Nabarangpur district was the wettest at 395 mm rainfall, followed by Nandahandi at 344 mm, and Boriguma in Koraput district at 307.8 mm rainfall.

  According to the weather forecast, a ‘red’ alert for heavy rain has been issued for five districts on Saturday: Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar. An ‘orange’ alert has been issued for five other districts — Dehradun, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Almora — while a ‘yellow’ alert is in place for the remaining three districts: Haridwar, Uttarkashi, and Tehri.

  For Sunday, a ‘red’ alert has been issued for four districts — Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, and Haridwar; an ‘orange’ alert for four others — Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Nainital, and Rudraprayag; and a ‘yellow’ alert for the remaining five districts — Bageshwar, Almora, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, and Pithoragarh.

  The meteorological department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in many places and extremely heavy rainfall in some areas during this period.

  Rainfall to intensify across Uttar Pradesh; extremely heavy downpours likely in places, flash flood risk flagged

  Uttar Pradesh is likely to witness intense rainfall activity over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday (September 25, 2026), issuing a ‘red alert’ for several districts, while warning of heavy to very heavy rain at several places, and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations.

  The State government has put the district administrations on alert in view of the forecast till September 27.

  People have been advised not to venture outside unnecessarily during lightning and excessive rainfall, avoid bathing in rivers and water bodies, and exercise caution.

  The weather system, caused after a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the southern Odisha coast and moved northwest, is likely to remain intense for the next 12 hours before gradually weakening into a well-marked low-pressure area during the subsequent 12 hours, according to the weather bulletin.

  The system is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Uttar Pradesh, with heavy to very heavy rain likely in eastern Uttar Pradesh on September 25 and 26 and in western Uttar Pradesh on September 26. Extremely heavy rainfall is also possible at isolated places, the weather office said.

  The weather department has warned that intense rainfall could trigger flash floods in some watersheds of the State. Strong surface winds are also likely to accompany the rain, with speeds of 30-40 kmph and gusts reaching around 50 kmph, while gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, occasionally reaching 60 kmph, are possible at isolated places.

  Rain and thundershowers are expected at many places in western Uttar Pradesh and most places in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
