US President Donald Trump is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss artificial intelligence. US President Donald Trump said artificial intelligence will be a “big topic of discussion” when he meets Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, as Washington and Beijing look at ways to communicate if things go seriously wrong with AI.

“A big day with President Xi of China. Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is,” Trump said in a post on this social media platform Truth Social. He added that China’s position was the same and said the US Department of Justice was its “guardrail”.

The talks come as the US and China remain locked in a broader AI race, from building more powerful models and securing computing capacity to controlling access to advanced chips.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last week that Washington had proposed a notification mechanism with China for major AI incidents that rise to the level of a national security concern. The idea is to give the two countries a channel to alert each other about serious AI-related incidents and build what Bessent called a “shared vision of common goals and common threats”.

The mechanism could cover risks from increasingly autonomous AI systems, AI-enabled cyberattacks, biological misuse and other threats. For now, it is less about agreeing on how AI should be regulated and more about having a way to communicate if a major incident occurs.

That discussion comes as AI companies themselves push for more coordination around frontier AI risks. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called on the industry to “pace the frontier”, while OpenAI has pushed for international standards around evaluating AI capabilities, risks and incidents. OpenAI has also argued that some AI safety requirements and incident reporting mechanisms will need to work across national borders.

The US and China, however, do not necessarily see AI risks in the same way. Chinese researchers have traditionally focused more on deepfakes, information security and social disruption, while US researchers have placed greater emphasis on autonomous systems, loss of human control and AI misalignment.
