Railways has approved multiple infrastructure and safety projects across the country, including Kavach 4.0 installation on 607.7 route kilometres in Lucknow Division at Rs 252 crore, Electronic Interlocking at seven Solapur Division stations for Rs 209 crore, a 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV traction upgrade on the Savalyapuram-Guntur section for Rs 142 crore, and a four-lane road overbridge in Gujarat costing Rs 133.2295 crore. The projects aim to strengthen railway safety, signalling, traction capacity and operational efficiency.

Indian Railways greenlights Kavach 4.0 on UP section for Rs 252 crore — Indian Railways on Saturday said it has approved the provision of Kavach Version 4.0 on 607.7 Route Kilometres of the Lucknow Division of Northeastern Railway at a total cost of Rs 252 crore.

Indian Railways has approved several infrastructure and safety projects across different railway divisions, aimed at strengthening train safety, modernising signalling systems and improving operational efficiency.

The projects include the expansion of the indigenous automatic train protection system Kavach Version 4.0, installation of Electronic Interlocking (EI), an upgrade to the electric traction system and construction of a four-lane road overbridge (ROB).

Kavach 4.0 approved for 607.7 route km in Lucknow Division

The Railway Ministry has approved the installation of Kavach Version 4.0 across 607.7 route kilometres of the Lucknow Division of North Eastern Railway at an estimated cost of Rs 252 crore.

According to a Railway Ministry press statement, the project will extend Kavach 4.0 coverage across the remaining identified sections of the division, strengthening safety infrastructure for train operations.

Kavach is an indigenous automatic train protection system designed to help prevent collisions and overshooting of red signals. It can automatically apply brakes when required and assists in monitoring train movements.

Electronic Interlocking at 7 Solapur Division stations

The ministry has also approved the installation of Electronic Interlocking (EI) at seven stations in the Solapur Division of Central Railway at a total cost of Rs 209 crore.

The modern signalling system is expected to strengthen signalling infrastructure across the division and facilitate the deployment of Kavach, officials said.

Electronic Interlocking uses computer-based technology to control railway signalling and points, helping ensure that conflicting train movements are prevented.

Railway electric traction system to get upgrade

Another project approved by the ministry involves upgrading the electric traction system from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV on the 73-route-kilometre Savalyapuram-Guntur section of South Coast Railway.

The project has been approved at a total cost of Rs 142 crore.

“Covering 146 track kilometres, the project will strengthen the electric traction infrastructure and enhance its capacity to support growing railway operations,” the ministry said.

The upgrade is aimed at increasing the capacity of the electric traction system to support railway operations on the section.

Four-lane road overbridge approved in Gujarat

The Railway Ministry has also approved the construction of a four-lane road overbridge (ROB) in place of Level Crossing No. 53 at Km 62/2-4 on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section of Western Railway.

The project will cost Rs 133.2295 crore and will be implemented on a cost-sharing basis with the state government.

“The construction of the four-lane ROB will facilitate smoother movement of road traffic, thereby reducing interference with railway operations,” the ministry said.

The bridge is expected to improve road traffic movement at the existing level-crossing location while reducing the interaction between road and rail traffic.

Indian Railways focuses on safety and capacity

The approvals cover multiple aspects of railway infrastructure, including automatic train protection, signalling, electric traction and road connectivity.

Together, the projects are aimed at strengthening safety systems, increasing infrastructure capacity and supporting smoother train operations across the concerned railway divisions.
