India’s exports surge to key markets: US shipments rise 21.83%, China 52.35% & Singapore 161% in August; check the latest trade data
Synopsis
Trade data: August saw a notable rise in India’s merchandise exports to both the US and China, with shipments recording strong year-on-year growth. Imports from the two countries also increased significantly during the month. From April to August, India’s exports to the US grew by more than 6%, while exports to Singapore surged sharply, highlighting varied trends in the country’s international trade.

India’s merchandise exports to the US rose 21.83% year-on-year to USD 8.4 billion in August, while shipments to China jumped 52.35% to USD 1.9 billion, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry on Tuesday.
Imports from both countries also recorded strong growth during the month, according to the ministry’s data.
Imports from China increased 17% year-on-year to USD 12.77 billion in August, while inbound shipments from the US rose 65.78% to USD 5.97 billion.

Note: The latest data for services sector released by RBI is for July 2026. The data for August 2026 is an estimation. (ii) Data for April-August 2025-26 and April-June 2026-27 has been revised on pro-rata basis using quarterly balance of payments data.
India-US trade: Exports rise 6.17% in April-August
During April-August 2026-27, India’s merchandise exports to the US increased 6.17% to USD 42.8 billion. Imports from the US during the period rose 29.6% to USD 28 billion.
India and the US are currently negotiating a trade pact. The US imposed an additional 10% tariff on Indian imports from July 24.

India-China trade: Exports jump 38.71%
India’s exports to China increased 38.71% to USD 9.64 billion during the first five months of the current financial year.
Imports from China rose 27% during the period to USD 65.5 billion, according to the Commerce Ministry data.
India’s exports to Singapore surge 161% in August
India’s exports to Singapore recorded one of the sharpest increases among major trading partners in August, rising 160.96% year-on-year to USD 1.9 billion.
During April-August 2026-27, exports to Singapore jumped 96.56% to USD 9.5 billion.
India also recorded positive export growth to Germany, South Africa, Tanzania, Australia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Italy during August.
Exports to UAE, Netherlands and Saudi Arabia decline
However, exports to the UAE, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia declined during August.
Shipments to the UAE fell 26.1% to USD 2.4 billion, with the decline attributed to the West Asia crisis.
Imports from Oman, Taiwan and Brazil surge
On the import side, India recorded higher inbound shipments from Russia, South Korea, Singapore, Germany, Oman, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brazil during August.
Imports from Oman surged 157.45% year-on-year to USD 1.64 billion, while shipments from Taiwan rose 108.31% to USD 1.6 billion.
Imports from Brazil increased 132% to USD 1.12 billion during the month.
