Inspections at multiplexes in Kochi set to continue in October

Following joint inspections by various departments at movie theatres over complaints of food overpricing, the authorities are gearing up to launch another inspection drive in October.

A joint inspection by the Legal Metrology, Civil Supplies and Food Safety departments was conducted at multiplexes in malls last month, following complaints of overpricing. Notices were served on establishments found violating norms.

“Action will be taken against establishments found engaging in malpractices, such as serving inaccurate quantities of food,” said Rajesh Sam, Controller of Legal Metrology, Keralam.

“Food items are overpriced at these complexes. However, there is no legal provision for us to enforce fixed prices or require outlets to reduce their current prices. We will continue our inspections to ensure that they comply with the rules,” said Mr. Sam.

He added that action had been taken against erring outlets following inspections at multiplexes across the State. “We found that, in some multiplexes, the quantity of non-packaged food items provided was less than specified,” he added.

For movie buffs, the inspections have raised hopes of lower prices.

“The prices of food items are on a par with those of movie tickets. For instance, popcorn at multiplexes can cost more than five times the open market rate,” said Aparna Surendran, a movie-goer.

Thrippunithura native Anu Rajesh said she avoided multiplexes. “The prices of food items and drinks at multiplexes are exorbitant. I avoid going there and prefer smaller theatres,” added Ms. Rajesh.

District Supply Officer Shaji V.R. said all multiplexes in Ernakulam were being covered by the drive. “In some multiplexes, free drinking water counters are not provided in adequate numbers, while some establishments were found not displaying products with their prices and weights. Notices were served on them,” added Mr. Shaji.
