Christa Pike failed execution: Christa Pike, who survived 2 lethal doses, was raped multiple times as a child; suffered horrific trauma worse than 99% of Americans
Synopsis
Christa Pike survived a failed execution in Tennessee after two doses of lethal-injection drugs were administered. The death row inmate had suffered severe childhood trauma, with an expert saying she experienced more severe adverse events than 99% of the US population. Pike was subjected to repeated sexual abuse and rape as a child before she was convicted of killing 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in 1995.

Christa was born with brain damage brought about by her mother’s use of alcohol during pregnancy.
Christa Pike, US convicted murderer, is undergoing treatment at a hospital and is and being given "life-saving measures" after Tennessee authorities failed in their attempt to execute her by lethal injection. Christa Pike was administered two syringes of the drug pentobarbital. But her legal team said these failed to stop her heartbeat and that she could still be heard snoring. As of now, her condition is not known.
Growing up, Christa Oike suffered an “almost unbearably abusive background,” according to Dr. Jonathan Pincus, Professor of Neurology at Georgetown University. A victim of child sexual abuse, multiple rapes, and parental abandonment and neglect, Christa first attempted to take her own life when she was twelve. When she was seventeen, a stranger grabbed her by the side of the road, threw her down, and violently raped her. The police never arrested him.

Nearly a year to the day after the rape, Christa and two other teenagers killed Colleen Slemmer. One of those teenagers was Christa’s boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp—a boy she loved even after he hit, kicked, and threatened her with a razor blade, according to Cornell Law School website.
Dr. Bethany Brand, a clinical psychologist with over three decades of specializing in the assessment and treatment of trauma-related disorders, described Christa’s history as “extraordinarily severe extreme trauma.” According to Dr. Brand, Christa “experienced more severe adverse events than 99% of the US population.”

Christa Pike faced traumatic childhood
Christa was born with brain damage brought about by her mother’s use of alcohol during pregnancy. From infancy, she suffered seizures, and as she grew up, she struggled to follow instructions and control her impulses. When Christa was a toddler, her grandmother’s boyfriend began raping her. Things got worse after Christa began school, when asked what she did at home, Christa drew a man with a horrifying face. Although the school contacted Christa’s parents, social services failed to intervene, and the police were never called.

When Christa was 11, she was raped by a man who lived in a trailer in her neighborhood
When Christa was 11, she was raped by a man who lived in a trailer in her neighborhood. Christa’s mother initially did not believe Christa, but when she developed an infection from the rape and a teacher intervened, the man was prosecuted. He pleaded guilty to a reduced assault charge and continued to live nearby.
School offered a respite from her abusive environment. Christa wanted to succeed. Her teachers described her as “intent on helping others” and said there was “something special about her, a spark.” At the same time, however, she was facing a new threat at home. Her mother’s male partners began to abuse Christa as well. Christa developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of the sexual violence she suffered as a child.

Christa Pike, now 50, and her boyfriend were convicted of the 1995 stabbing and beating of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer
What did Christa Pike do?
Christa Pike, now 50, and her boyfriend were convicted of the 1995 stabbing and beating of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, their classmate at a job training facility in Knoxville. The case garnered widespread attention at the time of the killing in part because a pentagram that was carved on Slemmer’s body and other elements of the crime stoked fears of Satan worship during the “satanic panic” of the 1980s and 1990s.
Journalists who were witness to the botched execution in Tennessee described snoring and complaints from Pike about pain. She was also kicking her feet so often that she knocked off the sheets laid on her. At times, the curtain was closed and journalists could only hear sounds. Pike’s lawyers said witnesses saw executioners injecting “both syringes of lethal injection chemicals,” but that Pike remained alive. According to lawyers, Pike “has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat” and that curtains to the death chamber “have gone down twice."
It was not immediately clear what went wrong with the administration of the drugs, or what Pike’s medical condition was. In a statement late Wednesday, her lawyers said that she was at a nearby hospital but that they did not know her condition. Tennessee officials confirmed to a federal judge late Wednesday that Pike was receiving medical care.
It’s the second time an execution did not go as planned in Tennessee this year. Tony Carruthers, convicted in three 1994 killings, was granted a one-year reprieve after executioners in May couldn’t find a vein for a backup IV.
'Worst botched execution ever'
“This event is the worst we’ve seen and unlike any other botched execution in the modern era,” said Robin Maher, the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center. “There is no precedent.”
Christa Pike was convicted of murdering a classmate, Colleen Slemmer, 19, in 1995 and sentenced to death. Pike was 18 at the time of the murder. In a phone interview with NBC News early Thursday, Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, described the failed execution attempt, and called it a "mess".
Reflecting on her life, Christa has stated: “I had more than my fair share of trauma growing up, and I realized that so many others have that didn’t commit violent crimes. I don’t use that or anything else as an excuse for what I did. There is no excuse for what I did. There are reasons for the way I acted. But nothing excuses the crime and the damage it’s caused to so many lives…. I take full responsibility for my actions, and regret everything that happened that night. If I could take it all back, I would. . . . I’m not even close to being the same person I was over 25 years ago.”
