Few things carry more weight in high school football than a rivalry game, but the intensity of those matchups can sometimes spill over into unsportsmanlike behavior. That appears to have happened in California, where an entire high school football program is now facing disciplinary action following a rivalry win..

Victor Valley High School’s varsity football program has been suspended for one week and will forfeit its next scheduled game following incidents surrounding its Sept. 11 meeting with rival Apple Valley, according to a USA Today report.

Why is the entire football team suspended?

Victor Valley came away with a 20-7 victory in the annual Bell Game, one of the most significant rivalries in the area. The celebration, however, drew the attention of school district officials, who determined that the conduct of some players and coaches went beyond what was acceptable.

Victor Valley Union High School District Superintendent Carl Coles and Victor Valley Principal Darius Robinson issued a joint statement announcing the punishment via Facebook.

“There is a clear line between passionate competition and unacceptable conduct,” the statement mentioned. “That line was crossed at the Bell Game on Friday, September 11. Members of the Victor Valley High School football team behaved in an unsportsmanlike manner toward the opposing team and its fans, including offensive gestures and language,” it further read.

The disciplinary action is limited to Victor Valley’s varsity players and coaching staff, while the school’s lower-level football teams remain unaffected.

What happened during the rivalry game?

District officials did not detail the specific gestures or actions that led to the suspension, nor did they name any of the players involved. However, footage shared online appears to shed some light on the incidents surrounding the game.

One video shows Victor Valley’s Jackrabbits mascot walking along the track around Apple Valley’s stadium. While passing the section occupied by the opposing crowd, the mascot appears to raise its middle finger toward the Sun Devil fans. The postgame scenes appear to have drawn even more attention.

Footage shared by X user, Chris Fore, shows Victor Valley players and coaches celebrating on the field following the victory. Toward the end of the video, several players appear to move toward the Apple Valley stands and interact with members of the opposing crowd.

After the final whistle, Victor Valley players ran toward the stands and appeared to taunt the Apple Valley fans before coaches intervened and directed them back toward their own sideline.

It remains unclear exactly what was said during the interaction. Much of the available footage shows the players waving toward the opposing bleachers rather than clearly capturing their words.
