Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held wide-ranging talks in New Delhi on Friday, with discussions expected to focus on raising annual bilateral trade to USD 100 billion by 2030 and strengthening cooperation in defence, energy and critical minerals.

Putin arrived in India earlier in the day for a three-day visit to attend the BRICS Summit. The two leaders are also expected to discuss expanding defence cooperation between India and Russia.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said both sides were exploring upgrades to BrahMos missiles. Moscow also remains committed to completing the remaining deliveries of S-400 air defence systems and is discussing the proposed supply of Su-57 fighter jets.

Energy cooperation is also on the agenda. Peskov said energy ties between the two countries remained robust. India and Russia are also considering negotiations linked to India’s plans to establish new civil nuclear reactors.

The Ukraine conflict and a possible roadmap to peace are expected to figure prominently in the discussions. Modi and Putin met on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Bishkek last week, where Modi called for an immediate end to the conflict and urged the Russian leader to shift from an “endless war towards the end of war”.

Renewed diplomatic efforts, including those led by the Trump administration, have intensified in recent days to find a resolution to the conflict.

Ahead of the talks, sources said the two countries would focus on reaching the USD 100 billion trade target by 2030. The discussions are also expected to cover industrial cooperation, collaboration in railways and tunnelling, development of the steel value chain and wider access to the Russian market for Indian exporters.

The leaders are likely to deliberate on civil nuclear cooperation, including the fuel cycle and life-cycle support. Increasing the mobility of skilled Indian workers to Russia and expanding cooperation in critical minerals are also expected to be discussed.
