The Kerala Railway Police have apprehended 48 people for alleged theft on trains during a month-long security operation conducted to strengthen passenger safety and prevent robberies on trains and railway premises. According to the police, the arrested suspects, including people from other States, have been remanded in judicial custody. The perpetrators allegedly targeted passengers who sleep on trains or railway platforms during the night, as well as passengers travelling on crowded trains.

The Railway Police stated that the arrests were made after detailed scientific investigations conducted with the assistance of the Cyber Cell and intelligence units.

Valuables worth more than ₹30 lakh were recovered from those arrested. The seized items include 54 mobile phones, two laptops, gold ornaments, ₹90,000 in cash, chargers and other electronic equipment. The police added that efforts are under way to identify the rightful owners of the recovered items Surveillance and inspections have also been intensified across railway stations.
