    Synopsis

Years before launching BeyGOOD, American iconic singer Beyoncé donated $2 million in 2006 toward 42 housing units in Houston for homeless people. The project reflected her early commitment to community support and came amid the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Beyoncé's philanthropy also extended to employment and addiction recovery apart from housing.

Beyoncé’s philanthropic work in Houston began years before the launch of BeyGOOD. In 2006, the singer donated $2 million toward the construction of the Knowles-Temenos Place Apartments, a 42-unit housing complex created for people experiencing homelessness.

The donation came in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when Houston was dealing with the impact of thousands of displaced people arriving in the city. Rather than focusing only on short-term relief, Beyoncé’s contribution helped fund a permanent housing project.

The initiative was an early example of the community-focused work that would later become closely associated with her charitable efforts.

Beyoncé put $2 million toward permanent housing

The Knowles-Temenos Place Apartments represented a significant philanthropic commitment from Beyoncé during the early years of her career.

The $2 million donation helped support 42 apartments in Houston, providing housing for people without stable accommodation. The project came shortly after Hurricane Katrina, which devastated parts of the Gulf Coast in 2005 and displaced large numbers of families.

Beyoncé had already participated in hurricane relief. In 2005, she took part in a Fashion for Relief event, with funds raised going toward communities affected by Katrina.

Her Houston roots shaped her philanthropy

Beyoncé’s involvement in community projects did not begin with the apartment complex. Her family had already been involved with Bread of Life, a Houston-based organisation, through the Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth, which was established in the late 1990s. The centre was funded by Destiny’s Child’s first single and was named after Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland.

Originally created as a resource for young people, the centre later evolved into a shelter that could accommodate roughly 175 to 200 people and eventually became a disaster relief hub.

In 2005, Beyoncé and her family also established the Survivor Foundation, with the mission: “Where There's A Will, We Help Make A Way.”

That history helps place the 2006 housing donation in a broader pattern of community work involving Beyoncé, her family and organisations in her hometown.

Beyoncé's charity work expanded beyond housing

The Houston housing project was just one part of Beyoncé’s early philanthropic efforts.

During The Beyoncé Experience tour in 2007, she worked with America’s Second Harvest and Bread of Life to organise food banks at tour stops.

In 2009, during the North American leg of her I AM… World Tour, she partnered with Feeding America and General Mills on the Show Your Helping Hand campaign. The initiative aimed to provide more than 3.5 million meals to local food banks while raising support for hunger relief.

Her philanthropy also extended to employment and addiction recovery.

After researching her role in the 2008 film Cadillac Records, Beyoncé donated her entire salary from the movie to Phoenix House, a drug and alcohol treatment organisation. The donation helped establish the Beyoncé Cosmetology Center, which provided job training for people recovering from addiction.

BeyGOOD came years after the Houston apartment project

Beyoncé formally launched BeyGOOD in 2013 during her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. The organisation later became a major platform for her charitable initiatives, supporting causes including education, disaster relief, economic opportunity, health and community development.

That means the 2006 $2 million housing donation came seven years before BeyGOOD was established.

At the time, Beyoncé’s charitable work was being carried out through family foundations, partnerships and individual community projects rather than the later BeyGOOD structure.

Beyoncé's housing work returned to Houston in 2026

Nearly two decades after the Knowles-Temenos Place Apartments project, housing once again became part of Beyoncé’s philanthropic work in Houston.

In 2026, Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland invested $8.4 million in the Knowles-Rowland House, a 31-unit permanent housing development with supportive services for people experiencing homelessness.

The development was built on the site of the original Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth and was scheduled to open in 2026.

The two housing projects are separate developments, but together they highlight a long-running connection between Beyoncé, her Houston roots and efforts to provide housing and support to people facing difficult circumstances.
