The BJP has taken an early lead over Congress in the initial counting, while results from major cities including Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota are being closely watched. Rajasthan Municipal Election Result 2026 Live: Counting of votes for Rajasthan's urban local body elections began at 8 am on Monday, September 14, with the ruling BJP and Congress locked in a closely watched contest across the state. Early results indicate an advantage for the Bharatiya Janata Party, but counting is still underway and the picture is expected to change as more wards report results.
Rajathan Election Result 2026 Live: BJP leading in 4 of 7 municipal corporations
Trends from seven municipal corporations in Rajasthan show the BJP leading in four and the Congress in three, with the two parties locked in a close contest in Alwar.
- Ajmer: Congress 15, BJP 12
- Alwar: BJP 4, Congress 4
- Udaipur: Congress 4, BJP 3
- Jaipur: BJP 5, Congress 2
- Jodhpur: Congress 6, BJP 4
- Pali: BJP 5, Congress 2
- Bhilwara: BJP 4, Congress 1
The elections cover 309 urban local bodies and 10,245 councillor seats across Rajasthan. Voting was conducted in two phases on September 9 and 11, with the results being counted simultaneously on Monday.
The contest is particularly significant for Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's BJP government, while Congress is looking to convert the momentum it gained in the 2024 Lok Sabha election into a stronger grassroots presence.
Rajasthan civic election result 2026: BJP vs Congress Previous Result
| Party | Early results |
| BJP | 81 |
| Congress | 46 |
| Independents | 28 |
The BJP had already started the election with an advantage from uncontested seats. Of the 77 candidates elected unopposed before polling, 44 were from the BJP, 16 from Congress and 17 were independents.
The bigger question now is whether that early advantage will hold when results from the major municipal corporations and councils start coming in.
Jaipur Municipal Election Result 2026 Live
Jaipur is one of the biggest centres of attention on result day. Counting for all 19 urban local bodies in Jaipur district began at 8 am. The district has 690 wards, including 150 wards of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation and 540 wards across two municipal councils and 16 municipalities. A total of 2,644 candidates are contesting these wards.
For the Jaipur Municipal Corporation wards, counting is being conducted at Shri Bhawani Niketan College of Pharmacy on Sikar Road. The 150 wards are being counted across 15 rooms, with 150 counting tables arranged for the exercise.
Postal ballots will be counted before the EVM results are taken up. The administration has put in place tight security and access restrictions at the counting centres. Officials expect results to be declared in batches as counting progresses.
Jaipur result: Why the BJP vs Congress fight matters
Jaipur is more than a municipal contest for the two major parties. The BJP is seeking to demonstrate that its urban support base remains intact under the Bhajan Lal Sharma government. Congress, meanwhile, is hoping for a stronger showing in the state capital after its improved performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
The Jaipur contest also carries significance because of the large number of wards and the political influence of the city. Results across the corporation and smaller urban bodies in the district will offer an early indication of which party has been more successful in translating its campaign into booth-level support.
Jaipur recorded a turnout of 62.88% across its 150 municipal corporation wards, with more than 15.3 lakh voters casting their ballots.
Rajasthan municipal election: What is at stake for BJP?
For the BJP, the civic election is effectively a mid-term political test. The party came to power in Rajasthan in December 2023, and these are among the first major elections since the Bhajan Lal Sharma government took office. The outcome will provide a reading of the government's urban support base and the BJP's organisational strength at the local level.
A strong BJP performance across the municipal corporations and councils would strengthen the government's claim that its support remains firm in urban Rajasthan.
The party's ability to win municipal boards, rather than merely individual wards, will be particularly important.
What does the result mean for Congress?
Congress has a different test before it. PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasra has been closely involved in the party's organisation and candidate selection. This election will therefore be watched as another test of his ability to strengthen Congress at the grassroots.
The party has attacked the BJP government over issues including law and order, unemployment, farmers, education, prices and administrative decisions. The civic results will show whether those issues have translated into votes.
Congress will also be looking beyond the raw councillor tally. Winning individual wards is one thing. Controlling municipal boards is another. For a party preparing for the 2028 Assembly election, the number of municipalities and councils it can influence could prove more politically important than the statewide ward count alone.
Alwar, Jodhpur and Kota in focus
Several cities will be closely watched for the political signals they send.
Alwar is important because Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully has been particularly active in the Congress campaign. A strong Congress showing in the area could strengthen his position within the party's second-rung leadership.
Jodhpur will also attract attention because of former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's continuing political influence in the city. The results here could be read both as a Congress-BJP contest and as a test of Gehlot's continuing grassroots appeal.
Kota presents another significant contest. A strong Congress performance could boost former minister Shanti Dhariwal's political relevance, while a BJP win would strengthen the position of BJP leader Om Birla in the city.
Sachin Pilot's relatively limited visible role in the civic campaign is also likely to generate discussion within Congress after the results.
Rajasthan municipal election result: High turnout raises the stakes
Voter participation has been relatively strong across Rajasthan. The first phase recorded 76.41% turnout, while the second phase saw about 70.68% turnout. The overall turnout across the two phases was around 73%, higher than the previous urban local body election's average.
The high participation makes the results particularly interesting because both BJP and Congress will be looking for clues about whether increased voter engagement helped one side more than the other.
Smaller municipalities have also recorded exceptionally high turnout. Dhorimanna in Barmer, for example, recorded more than 91% voting in the second phase.
BJP vs Congress: Who is winning Rajasthan?
Early trend: BJP is ahead of Congress in the initial declared wards. But it is too early to call the overall Rajasthan municipal election.
With thousands of wards still to be counted, the balance can change substantially once results from Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Udaipur, Ajmer, Pali and other major urban centres start coming in.
The final political test will not simply be BJP vs Congress ward numbers. It will be about which party emerges in control of the maximum number of urban local bodies.
The elections for mayors and chairpersons are scheduled for September 21, followed by elections for deputy mayors, deputy chairpersons and vice-presidents on September 22.
That means Monday's councillor results are only the first part of Rajasthan's civic power contest.
