Michael Bloomberg’s name is closely associated with philanthropy, but his extraordinary giving to Johns Hopkins University began with something remarkably small: a $5 donation. Decades later, the US billionaire, entrepreneur and former New York City mayor has contributed more than $1.5 billion to his alma mater, helping reshape financial aid, medical education, public health research and the university’s broader academic mission.

While MacKenzie Scott has attracted global attention for her large-scale philanthropic giving, Bloomberg’s decades-long relationship with Johns Hopkins offers another striking example of how billionaire philanthropy can transform an educational institution.

Bloomberg graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. The following year, he made his first $5 donation to the university. That modest contribution eventually grew into what the university describes as more than $1.5 billion in total giving.

From a $5 gift to more than $1.5 billion

Bloomberg’s relationship with Johns Hopkins has lasted for more than six decades. His donations have supported everything from scientific research and public health to student financial aid and new facilities.

He served as chair of the university’s Board of Trustees from 1996 to 2002. In 2001, Johns Hopkins renamed its School of Hygiene and Public Health as the Bloomberg School of Public Health, recognizing his support and commitment to public health.

His philanthropy has also helped establish professorships, research institutes and major medical facilities.

A $1 million gift established the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Professorship in the Humanities. He also provided $125 million to establish the Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Malaria Research Institute.

Another $120 million gift helped make possible the 12-story, 560,000-square-foot Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center.

His $1.8 billion financial aid gift

One of Bloomberg’s most consequential contributions came in 2018, when he announced a historic $1.8 billion gift to Johns Hopkins, entirely dedicated to financial aid.

The donation allowed the university to begin admitting students without considering their ability to pay, significantly expanding access for students from lower- and middle-income families.

The goal was not simply to increase the university’s resources, but to make a Johns Hopkins education accessible to talented students who might otherwise struggle to afford it.

Bloomberg has repeatedly emphasized that philanthropy should produce a meaningful impact.

“Each dollar I have given to Johns Hopkins has been well-spent improving the institution and, just as importantly, making its education available to students who might otherwise not be able to afford it,” says Bloomberg, who served as Chairman of the University Board of Trustees from 1996-2002.

Another $1 billion gift in 2024

Bloomberg continued his support in 2024 with another $1 billion gift aimed at making medical school free for a majority of Johns Hopkins students.

The contribution also increased financial aid for students studying nursing, public health and other graduate programs.

The gifts have helped make Bloomberg one of the most significant living donors to an educational institution.

Bloomberg credits Johns Hopkins for shaping him

Bloomberg has described himself as an average high school student, but says Johns Hopkins helped spark his interest in leadership and governance.

During his time at the university, he served as president of his senior class and his fraternity before graduating with an engineering degree in 1964.

Looking back at his philanthropy, Bloomberg has highlighted the role of research and education in creating lasting change.

“Giving is only meaningful if the money will make a difference in people’s lives, and I know of no other institution that can make a bigger difference in lives around the world through its groundbreaking research,” says Bloomberg.

His journey from a $5 gift to more than $1.5 billion illustrates how a lifelong connection to an alma mater can evolve into one of the largest philanthropic commitments in higher education.
