In 1999, American teacher Ronald Sakolsky gave $5,000 to Chinese environmentalist Yin Yuzhen after seeing her fight against desertification in Inner Mongolia. Sakolsky eventually travelled to Inner Mongolia and met Yin in person in 2000. Decades later, their reunion ended in tears as the trees she planted grew into a forest of more than 50,000 trees.

In 1999, American teacher Ronald Sakolsky was teaching English in China when a television report about Yin Yuzhen, a woman planting trees to fight desertification in Inner Mongolia, moved him to act.

He spent two months raising $5,000 to support her work. Nearly three decades later, that small act of kindness had helped become part of a forest of more than 50,000 trees — and brought the two strangers-turned-friends together again.

How a $5,000 donation helped a forest take root

Sakolsky was working as an English teacher in Luoyang, China, through a China-US teacher exchange programme when he saw a television report about Yin and her family's battle against the advancing desert sands in the Mu Us Sandy Land.

Yin and her husband had been planting trees in an effort to restore the degraded landscape. The conditions were difficult, but Yin continued her work.

Moved by what he saw, Sakolsky decided to help. He spent about two months contacting organisations in the US before a Boston-based charity agreed to provide $5,000. The money helped Yin purchase saplings for her afforestation work.

What happened next took decades

Yin continued planting and caring for trees long after the original donation was spent. Trees associated with Sakolsky's contribution eventually grew into a forest of more than 50,000 trees.

The figure is only one part of Yin's much larger environmental effort. According to Xinhua, she planted her first sapling in 1986 and has spent roughly four decades fighting desertification. Her broader work has helped green more than 70,000 mu of sandy land, equivalent to about 4,667 hectares.

The American teacher and Chinese tree planter met in 2000

Sakolsky eventually travelled to Inner Mongolia and met Yin in person in 2000. During the visit, he saw the harsh landscape for himself and learned more about the challenges of planting and protecting trees in the sandy region.

But after that meeting, the two gradually lost touch. Sakolsky returned to the US, while Yin continued her environmental work in Inner Mongolia. More than two decades passed without another meeting. The trees, however, kept growing.

Yin searched for her old friend in 2026

In May 2026, Yin posted a video online searching for Sakolsky. She wanted to reconnect with the American teacher who had supported her tree-planting work years earlier.

The appeal eventually helped locate him. The pair reconnected through a video call, their first direct conversation in many years.

Yin reportedly hoped Sakolsky would return to China so he could see how the landscape had changed and witness the trees that had grown since their first meeting. He eventually made the journey back.

They reunited after 27 years

On August 23, 2026, Sakolsky arrived at Ordos Ejin Horo International Airport in Inner Mongolia, where Yin and members of her family were waiting.

When the two finally saw each other again, they embraced and cried. Sakolsky, now 69, described the reunion as a “dream come true.”

The meeting came roughly 27 years after he first learned about Yin's struggle in 1999 and about 26 years after their first face-to-face meeting.

During his visit, Sakolsky also planned to return to the area where he had first seen Yin's tree-planting work and plant trees with her.

What began with a $5,000 donation in 1999 ultimately became something far bigger: decades of environmental restoration, a forest of thousands of trees and a friendship that survived more than two decades without contact.
