Mumbai: Seeking to carry forward the momentum of the recent GenZ protests, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) brought students together at the Y.B. Chavan Auditorium in Mumbai on Monday. The event, attended by a packed audience, featured political speeches, cultural performances and discussions around student issues and wider social concerns.

AISA national president Neha Bora said the gathering marked the beginning of a larger movement aimed at transforming the education system and bringing about broader change in the country.

Referring to the recent protest at Jantar Mantar over paper leaks, Bora said the anger among students was rooted in a series of incidents involving the student community over the past decade.

“The anger seen at Jantar Mantar was for the cause of paper leaks, but the anger at the site reflected several incidents of the past that people had forgotten about, starting from the death by suicide of Rohith Vemula after facing caste discrimination in 2016, to students being called anti-national and action against student activists over the last decade,” she said.

Bora said the treatment meted out to students during the Jantar Mantar protest had further strengthened their resolve. “We will change the model of education in the country and bring a new wave,” she said, adding that students would give a “fitting response” to the treatment they had received.

The auditorium reverberated with slogans of “Inquilab Zindabad” as students and participants voiced their support for the movement.

Actor Shabana Azmi, who addressed the gathering, said the recent mobilisation had challenged perceptions about the younger generation. “We misunderstood the new generation, but they have changed our perception. We thought that they only think about their future and not about the greater scheme of things, but they have brought a wave that millennials could not. I am grateful to have witnessed it,” she said.

Rhea Ahire, a model and actress who was famed for her photo in the protest, also shared her experience. "There was a sense of fear in me, but I also sure that I was not wrong. I urged everyone to have patience and speak to the authorities with respect. The students should also have basic information about their rights before entering such a situation," she said.

The event also featured comedian Varun Grover, Abhishek Mathew and other performers. Mathew and Shaurya Tyagi presented music and stand-up performances centred on social issues, providing a lighter interlude to the political speeches and student mobilisation.

"While cases against several students had been withdrawn, there are several other detainees still fighting to get their cases withdrawn," said Grover.
