UGC-NET June 2026 exam to be conducted again in September: Centre to Delhi HC

Synopsis

The Centre informed the Delhi High Court about retesting three UGC-NET subjects. Sociology, English, and Commerce papers will be re-conducted on specific dates. This decision followed complaints regarding errors and alleged question paper leaks. A candidate's petition seeking a stay on results was disposed of by the court.

The Centre on Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that a retest would be conducted for three subjects, including Sociology, in the UGC-NET June 2026 examination following complaints of errors in the question papers.



Taking note of the submission made by Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, Justice Jasmeet Singh disposed of a petition filed by a candidate who appeared for the Sociology paper on June 30. The petitioner had sought a stay on the declaration of results pending an independent investigation and re-conduct of the examination following allegations of a question paper leak.



The English and Commerce papers will be re-conducted on September 9, while the Sociology paper will be held on September 10, the SG informed the High Court.

The SG made the submission at the beginning of the hearing on the petition, which had sought a stay on the declaration of results pending an independent probe and re-conduct of the examination for the concerned subjects if the alleged leak was established.



Petitioner Aman Singh Yadav, who appeared for the Sociology paper on June 30, had sought interim protection against the declaration of results pending an independent investigation into allegations that the question paper was leaked and commercially circulated hours before the examination.



The plea stated that the petitioner had already submitted a representation to the NTA regarding serious errors in the question paper as well as the alleged leak, but had not received a response.

It also sought directions for an independent probe by the CBI or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the alleged leakage of the question papers.



The CBI was represented by standing counsel Premtosh Mishra.



In a public notice, the NTA said it had received several complaints regarding multiple errors in the question papers of the three subjects and had constituted a committee to examine the issues.



The development has drawn renewed criticism of the NTA, which has already announced plans to overhaul the examination system.
