Indian Railways has a plan for more tracks, less congestion and more trains: What are the train routes where your journey will become easier?
Synopsis
Indian Railways is set to upgrade seven heavily trafficked routes, transforming them into four-line corridors. This ambitious project targets approximately 11,000 kilometers of high-density track, addressing the rising demands for passenger and freight services. Ultimately, these improvements will contribute to India's efforts toward sustainable transportation and cost efficiencies, laying the groundwork for substantial future growth in the rail sector.
ANIUnion Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has outlined plans to expand capacity on seven of India’s busiest railway routes by developing them into four-line corridors.
The high-density routes span nearly 11,000 km and currently handle around 41 per cent of the country’s total railway traffic, despite accounting for only about 16 per cent of the overall railway network.

The expansion is aimed at meeting the rising demand for passenger and freight movement while strengthening the capacity of some of the country’s most heavily used rail corridors.

Indian Railways four-laning plan: Which routes are covered?
The seven high-density railway routes identified for the four-laning programme connect several major cities and regions across India.
These corridors are:
- Delhi-Howrah
- Howrah-Chennai
- Chennai-Mumbai
- Mumbai-Delhi
- Delhi-Chennai
- Mumbai-Howrah
- Delhi-Guwahati
The routes form an important part of India's railway network, carrying a significant share of both passenger and freight traffic.
Seven high-density railway routes to get more tracks
Under the expansion plan, the existing high-density network will be developed to accommodate four railway lines. The additional capacity is expected to help trains operate more efficiently on routes where demand is particularly high.
The move comes as Indian Railways faces increasing requirements for passenger services as well as the transportation of goods across the country.
By adding more tracks, the railways can create greater room for additional services and improve the movement of freight without relying solely on the existing infrastructure.
Ashwini Vaishnaw highlights railways' economic and environmental benefits
Vaishnaw also highlighted the broader economic and environmental advantages of rail transport while discussing the expansion.
Railways can move large numbers of passengers and substantial quantities of freight over long distances, making them an important part of India's efforts to develop more efficient and cleaner transport systems.
The planned expansion is therefore expected to support not only capacity enhancement but also India's wider push towards lower transport costs and cleaner mobility.
Railway network expansion to support passenger and freight growth
The four-laning of the seven high-density corridors is part of a broader effort to prepare India's railway infrastructure for future demand.
The routes already carry a disproportionate share of the country's railway traffic compared with the size of the network they occupy. Expanding their capacity could help Indian Railways handle further growth in passenger numbers and freight volumes.
The government has said the wider objective is to build a railway network with higher capacity, lower transportation costs and greater support for cleaner mobility.
What does four-laning mean for Indian Railways?
Four-laning these key routes essentially means creating four railway lines along the high-density network, allowing more trains to operate across busy corridors.
For passengers, increased capacity could support the introduction of more services as demand grows. For freight operators, additional tracks could help facilitate the movement of goods and reduce pressure on existing lines.
The programme is consequently being positioned as a major infrastructure upgrade designed to support India's long-term passenger and freight requirements.
