Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could be settling into one of Britain’s most celebrity-filled corners with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The Cotswolds is reportedly their new home, putting the Sussexes in the same exclusive area as Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, as well as the Beckhams, Kate Moss and Stella McCartney, who all own property in the region. According to BBC, the family will base themselves at a private property outside of London in the Cotswolds area.

Ellen DeGeneres, who also left her native America, lives in the Cotswolds with Portia de Rossi. The Beckhams, Kate Moss and Stella McCartney also own properties there, according to Vanity Fair.

The reported move would give Harry and Meghan a private countryside base while keeping them relatively close to King Charles III and his Gloucestershire residence, Highgrove. It could also provide a quieter setting for Archie and Lilibet as they begin school in England.

A Cotswolds home could put the Sussexes among some very famous neighbors

The Cotswolds has long attracted celebrities looking for a quieter alternative to London. For Harry and Meghan, the area would offer countryside privacy while still being within reach of the capital. And they would certainly not be the only famous names living or owning property there.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi live in the Cotswolds, while David and Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss and Stella McCartney also have properties in the area. That makes the reported Sussex move potentially another high-profile addition to the region's celebrity community. The setting may also appeal to Harry for another reason: Highgrove House, King Charles' private country residence, is nearby in Gloucestershire.

Why Harry and Meghan could choose the Cotswolds

The reported location would give the family something they have struggled to maintain during visits to Britain: privacy. Harry and Meghan previously lived in the Cotswolds after their 2018 wedding, but their time there was ultimately short-lived. Their privacy was compromised when photographs of their rented home were taken.

Why the Cotswolds could be a good fit

The Sussexes are no strangers to the Cotswolds. Harry and Meghan previously lived in the area in 2018, shortly after their wedding. However, they eventually left after their privacy was compromised and photographs of their rented property were taken.

As Vanity Fair noted, Highgrove could offer proximity to King Charles while keeping the couple at a greater distance from Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Harry and Meghan will not return to Frogmore Cottage

Frogmore Cottage is unlikely to become the Sussexes' UK home again. Harry and Meghan received Frogmore Cottage as a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth II and lived there with their son Archie. After stepping back from royal duties and leaving Britain, they continued to use the property as a UK base.

That changed in 2023, when the couple was asked to vacate the Windsor property following the publication of Harry's memoir, Spare. Harry has since faced the recurring problem of finding somewhere private to stay during his UK visits.

During a recent visit, he stayed for part of the trip at Althorp, the former home of his mother, Princess Diana, after a dispute involving his security arrangements.

What about their Montecito mansion?

Moving to Britain does not mean the Sussexes are giving up their American base. Harry and Meghan are expected to retain their Montecito, California, home, where they have lived with Archie and Lilibet since leaving Britain.

They also have a property in Portugal, meaning the family will continue to have homes on both sides of the Atlantic. The arrangement gives the Sussexes the option of maintaining their established California life while spending an extended period in Britain.

Archie and Lilibet's school is another clue

The children's education appears to be one of the biggest factors behind the UK move. Archie and Lilibet are reportedly enrolled at schools in England and are expected to begin the new school year in September. Their school is also being kept private, with reports suggesting it is located somewhere close to the family's new home.

That makes the location of their UK residence particularly important. Rather than simply being a temporary visit, the arrangement appears designed to give the children a more sustained experience of life in Britain.
