In Mexico, a social enterprise has found a way to transform plastic waste into building panels and use them to construct small, affordable homes that can cost families about $280. “It only takes seven days to build a house that uses two tons of plastic,” said González. The Mexican idea turning plastic waste into homes

The project was developed by Mexican entrepreneur Carlos Daniel González, who founded EcoDom in Puebla in 2013. His idea was aimed at tackling two problems at the same time: the growing amount of plastic waste and the shortage of affordable housing.

González grew up in Puebla and saw the effects of poverty and pollution around him. “As a kid, I remember seeing all of the plastic and the contamination it caused, for us and for the animals,” González told Bright Vibes. “I’ve always cared about the environment, so I decided I had to create and lead a solution.”

How does plastic become a house?

EcoDom collects discarded plastic such as bottles, containers, bags and old toys. The material is sorted to remove plastics that could produce harmful fumes, before being chopped into small pieces.

The plastic is then heated to around 350 degrees Celsius until it melts. It is placed into a hydraulic press, which compresses the material into large panels that can be used for walls and roofs. The panels are roughly 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 1 inch thick. A typical house requires about 80 panels.

A $280 home made from 2 tonnes of waste

The homes are relatively small, measuring around 430 to 460 square feet, with two rooms, a bathroom, living space and a kitchen. According to the report, a house can cost families around 5,000 Mexican pesos, or approximately $280, when government subsidies are included.

And the construction time is another striking part of the idea. “It only takes seven days to build a house that uses two tons of plastic,” said González.

“This has the potential to grow exponentially,” said González. “The problem of trash is huge in my country. In the whole world, there’s a ton of trash. In the next year, I want to grow the company ten-fold.

First, we will concentrate in Mexico, but in 3-5 years, we want to go to other countries. There is poverty everywhere. The world is a house for everyone, and it’s worth it to fight for expanding this business. I will dedicate the rest of my life to this.”

Why use plastic for walls and roofs?

The recycled plastic panels are designed to be durable and resistant to moisture. González has argued that the material can provide insulation while keeping construction costs low.

The concept also gives plastic waste a second life instead of allowing it to accumulate in landfills or the environment.

The project grew beyond a few houses

EcoDom's work eventually expanded into municipal housing projects. Reports say the company built 500 rooms and later secured contracts for another 300 homes in nearby Mexican towns. Its facility was also reported to process around 5.5 tonnes of plastic waste every day.

The company also worked with local waste collectors, offering better rates for the plastic they collected. This meant the project was not only about recycling and housing but also about creating an additional source of income for people involved in waste collection.

Could plastic waste become a housing solution?

González believed the model could eventually be expanded beyond Mexico.

“This has the potential to grow exponentially,” said González. “The problem of trash is huge in my country. In the whole world, there’s a ton of trash. In the next year, I want to grow the company ten-fold.”

The idea remains striking for its simplicity: take a material that can persist in the environment for decades, turn it into construction panels, and use those panels to provide low-cost housing. For families facing housing challenges, that could make discarded plastic more than waste—it could become part of a home.
