How a palm-sized machine with no battery or plug pulls drinking water from Death Valley's driest air
Synopsis
A remarkable device has been developed to harvest drinkable water from the desolate air of Death Valley, powered entirely by sunlight. This technology, which utilizes metal-organic frameworks that chemist Omar Yaghi has crafted, produced substantial water output during tests in 2023. The updated design employs less expensive materials compared to its predecessors. Now, containerized units can generate hundreds of liters of water each day, even in extreme climates.

The 2023 field test, according to a report, was led by University of California, Berkeley chemist Omar Yaghi, who has since won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, shared with Susumu Kitagawa and Richard Robson, for developing the metal-organic frameworks, or MOFs, that power the technology.
How does the machine pull water out of dry air?
The harvester relies on MOF-303, an aluminium-based metal-organic framework, an ultra-porous crystalline material that Yaghi's team has refined for years.
The material captures water molecules from the air at night, when desert humidity is typically higher, and releases them during the day as sunlight warms it. The vapour then condenses on a cooler surface inside the device and drips into a container.
What did the Death Valley test actually produce?
that the device yielded up to 210 grams of water per kilogram of MOF-303 in a single day-and-night cycle in Death Valley, the highest output recorded at that site. The same device produced up to 285 grams per kilogram per day in the milder, more humid air of Berkeley, though its daily average there ran lower on some days.
The findings were published in a 2023 Nature Water paper by Woochul Song, Zhiling Zheng, Ali Alawadhi and Yaghi, and mark roughly double the output of an earlier passive version of the harvester, according to .
How does this build on Yaghi's earlier work?
The report noted that the Death Valley device is a further development of a 2017 collaboration between Yaghi's team and MIT mechanical engineers, which used a zirconium-based material called MOF-801.
That study, published in Science, showed a solar-driven harvester could produce meaningful water even at relative humidity as low as 20 to 30 per cent, yielding about 2.8 litres per kilogram of MOF daily, though some press accounts at the time described the same result as roughly 2.8 litres over a 12-hour window rather than a full day.
The report added that switching from MOF-801, priced at $160 per kilogram, to MOF-303, priced at $3 per kilogram, made the harvester far cheaper to build, though the higher yield came from MOF-303's own chemistry rather than its lower cost.
Why is desert air a harder problem than ordinary humidity?
Pulling water from moist air is comparatively simple, since most dehumidifiers just cool air below its dew point. Desert air is a tougher challenge because at relative humidity below 20 per cent, the dew point can fall below freezing, demanding far more energy for condensation to occur. MOFs get around this because their pores adsorb water molecules even at very low humidity, while heat alone is enough to release them.
Is this technology still just a prototype?
that the Death Valley unit was always meant as a proof of concept rather than a finished product, too small to meet a household's daily water needs, and that Yaghi said further advances in MOF chemistry had already boosted output well beyond the prototype, with his company beginning to build devices capable of producing dozens to hundreds of litres a day.
That company, now branded Atoco, has since gone considerably further. It has scaled the original hand-held concept into a modular unit roughly the size of a 20-foot shipping container, and real-world trials in Death Valley, where summer temperatures exceed 120°F and humidity can drop into the single digits, have validated the harvester's output even in those extreme conditions.
The container-sized unit can reportedly pull up to 1,000 litres of clean water a day from desert air. Yaghi delivered his Nobel lecture on the underlying chemistry, titled "Metal-Organic Frameworks, From Molecules to Society," in Stockholm in December 2025.
