A Himalayan disaster

Two major factors behind the Nepal disaster are its mountainous terrain and the intensity of the cloudburst or the melting of glaciers in the higher Himalayan ranges. The steep slopes would have allowed gushing water to reach the plains quickly; they can also become death traps for those caught in sudden downstream flows. While the media is still trying to assess the toll, it is certain to run into the thousands. This particular disaster is unprecedented in the scale of its destruction, with hundreds of villages and small towns wiped out. It is truly heartbreaking.

Post-disaster relief is no longer enough. It is most essential that Himalayan nations must collaborate on joint early-warning networks, real-time data sharing, and resilient infrastructure.

Revive cultural institution

Tamil Nadu’s apex cultural body, the Eyal Isai Nataka Mandram, is inactive, while the Kalaimamani State awards remain suspended. The TVK government should revive the institution, reconstitute its executive/general councils, and reform the awards process by separating classical arts from cinema.
