Is your hair dry, damaged, or your scalp unhealthy? Expert explains whether you need a haircut, hair spa, or scalp treatment.

Proper hair care means being informed about your hair's needs rather than following some trendy salon treatments. Any type of hair issue, split ends, dryness, frizz, dandruff, or excessive oil production, requires a specific procedure to address it. In the opinion of hair professionals, one should first determine whether the problem relates to length, split ends, or scalp. Nilesh Kothari, founder of Billu Salon, shared what your hair actually needs.

When do you need a haircut?

Nilesh highlighted that hair cutting is needed when you have structural issues. Split ends, hair breakage, and frizzy tips cannot be fixed with any products. “Regular hair trimming every 6-8 weeks allows getting rid of split ends and keeps hair healthy and more manageable,” added Nilesh. At the same time, hair cutting will be perfect in case you want to change your style.

When is a hair spa the right choice?

“If your hair appears dry and dull, looks rough, and becomes frizzy, you need a hair spa that allows restoring the moisture of your hair,” highlighted Nilesh. This procedure is mostly aimed at length and includes deep conditioning of hair. This procedure might be useful for chemically processed and often heat-processed hair. The frequency of a spa might be every three to four weeks, depending on the state of hair.

When does your scalp need attention?

Nilesh highlighted that hair scalp treatment is meant for an entirely different objective. It helps solve issues like dandruff, flaking, excess oil, build-up, and scalp irritation. Scalp cleaning and regulation ensure the provision of a more favourable environment for hair growth. The frequency varies depending on the issue, with specific treatments being ideal for times when there is an outbreak of the particular concern and monthly treatments appropriate for maintenance in other cases.

    Choosing the right one

The easiest way to do that is to find out the source of the problem. Get a haircut if the problem is damaged hair ends, go for a hair spa if it is dry or lacklustre hair, and go for scalp treatment if the issue relates to the scalp. In some cases, these treatments can be complementary.

For instance, a person who has scalp build-up along with damaged lengths can benefit from doing a scalp treatment and then conditioning. In general, proper hair maintenance depends on getting the right treatment for the right problem. If you know what is troubling your hair, it will help you select the right salon treatment.
