Delhi-NCR rain: Parts of capital on red alert as heavy showers return; check forecast

Thunderstorms and lightning are likely from the morning to noon, with another spell of light rain possible in the afternoon and evening, the IMD says.

Heavy rain lashed Delhi on Tuesday morning, with parts of the capital under a red alert after intense showers a day earlier caused waterlogging, traffic jams and flight disruptions across the NCR.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a district-level nowcast warning for North Delhi, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, North West Delhi, West Delhi, South West Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South East Delhi, Shahdara and East Delhi. The red alert is valid until 9:45 am.

The IMD said moderate rain was expected at many places across Delhi, with heavy to extremely heavy showers likely at isolated locations. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds were also forecast.

Delhi weather today

The weather office forecast a generally cloudy sky over Delhi, with rain likely from the morning to noon and another spell possible in the afternoon or evening. Winds could reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts of up to 60 kmph in some areas.

The IMD said temperatures could rise slightly, with the maximum between 34°C and 36°C and the minimum between 25°C and 27°C.

Delhi rain comes after Monday chaos

The fresh spell comes a day after heavy rain caused widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across Delhi-NCR. At Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, 15 flights were cancelled and more than 90 were delayed on Monday.

Delhi's August rainfall has already crossed normal levels at several monitoring stations. Safdarjung recorded 246.2 mm of rain up to August 24, around 29% above normal, while Ayanagar recorded 266.3 mm, 66% above its usual rainfall for this period.

Gurugram braced for another difficult day

Gurugram was badly affected by Monday's rain, with waterlogging reported at Narsinghpur, Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and several parts of old Gurugram.

School buses and ambulances were among those caught in waterlogging, while traffic slowed on several major roads, including Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Railway Road, Old Delhi Road, Mehrauli Road and Basai Road.

The Gurugram administration has advised corporate offices and other workplaces to allow employees to work from home on Tuesday. Schools and educational institutions have also been directed to conduct classes online.

Weather from Wednesday

The rain is expected to ease from Wednesday. The IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies and no rain in Delhi from August 26 to August 30.

Temperatures are also likely to climb, with the maximum expected to remain between 35°C and 37°C from Wednesday onwards. Minimum temperatures could remain between 25°C and 28°C.

Delhi-NCR

The Tuesday rain forecast also covers Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, where light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are possible from morning to noon, followed by another spell of light rain in the afternoon or evening.

From Wednesday, these areas are also expected to see partly cloudy skies with no significant rain forecast.
