The row over the proposed bifurcation of the Palakkad railway division has triggered a political slugfest between CPM and Congress leaders, with both sides challenging each other over protests against the Centre. CPM district secretary E.N. Suresh Babu challenged Congress MP V.K. Sreekandan to stage an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Railway Ministry in Delhi if he was serious about opposing the transfer of Mangaluru from Palakkad rail division. He also called on the Congress to launch a strong agitation against the Centre.

Mr. Sreekandan hit back, saying those with the courage to protest should take on the BJP instead of targeting him. He accused CPI(M) leaders of being afraid of the BJP and said they were attacking him instead of protesting against the Centre. Mr. Sreekandan also accused the CPI(M) of trying to mislead people over railway development in Palakkad.

The BJP, meanwhile, criticised both the Congress and CPI(M) for trading accusations over the issue. The BJP said the two fronts were trying to turn the matter into a political controversy instead of explaining the facts behind the Centre’s decision. With protests against the division continuing, the railway issue is emerging as a new point of confrontation among the political parties in the State.
