In 1979, Canadian fisherman Édouard Arsenault got a postcard from his daughter that inspired him to build an entire village from more than 25,000 recycled glass bottles

    Synopsis

In 1979, Canadian fisherman and carpenter Édouard T. Arsenault was inspired by a postcard from his daughter to build something extraordinary. He collected and cleaned discarded glass bottles and eventually created three structures in Prince Edward Island using more than 25,000 bottles. Today, the Bottle Houses remain a unique roadside attraction in Cap-Egmont.

    House from recycled bottles

Arsenault's first structure was the Six Gabled House, built in 1980. According to the Bottle Houses' official history, it used approximately 12,000 bottles and measured 20 feet by 14 feet

A postcard from his daughter sparked an extraordinary idea for Canadian fisherman and carpenter Édouard T. Arsenault, who transformed his retirement hobby into one of Prince Edward Island's most unusual attractions. In the summer of 1979, Arsenault received a postcard from his daughter Réjeanne showing a glass attraction she had visited on Vancouver Island. The image stayed with him and inspired him to start collecting empty bottles around his community.

Over the next several years, the retired fisherman turned those discarded bottles into three remarkable structures. More than 25,000 recycled glass bottles were eventually incorporated into the Bottle Houses in Cap-Egmont, Prince Edward Island.

A postcard became the starting point

After receiving the postcard, Arsenault began collecting bottles from nearby sources. A local restaurant and community dance halls supplied many of them, while friends, relatives and neighbours also contributed to his growing collection.

During the following winter, Arsenault worked in the basement of his Cap-Egmont home. He washed the bottles, removed their labels and carefully sorted them by their colours, shapes and sizes.

In the spring of 1980, at 66 years old, he began construction.

The project was initially a hobby rather than an attempt to create a tourist attraction. But as the walls began taking shape, people became curious. Visitors stopped to see what the retired Canadian fisherman was building, and their interest encouraged Arsenault to continue.

His first house used 12,000 bottles

Arsenault's first structure was the Six Gabled House, built in 1980. According to the Bottle Houses' official history, it used approximately 12,000 bottles and measured 20 feet by 14 feet.

The building had three main sections, with bottles of different colours and sizes forming its walls. Instead of hiding the recycled glass, Arsenault made it the central architectural feature.

The Six Gabled House opened to the public in 1981, turning his private retirement project into a growing visitor attraction.

He built a tavern and chapel

Arsenault continued adding to his bottle village. In 1982, he constructed a hexagonal tavern using approximately 8,000 bottles.

He also kept some unusual bottles out of the walls and displayed them inside the buildings.

His third major structure was a chapel, completed in 1983 using approximately 10,000 bottles. Together, the Six Gabled House, tavern and chapel incorporated more than 25,000 recycled bottles.

A fisherman, carpenter and lighthouse keeper

Arsenault's background helped him take on such an unusual construction project. Born in Cap-Egmont in 1914, he worked as a fisherman and carpenter, building fishing boats and carrying out construction work during the off-season.

He also served as the last resident keeper of the Cap-Egmont lighthouse before it was automated in 1957.

The bottle project became his major creative pursuit after retirement. He continued collecting bottles and cementing them into the structures until the project was completed.

The official history says Arsenault worked on the Bottle Houses from 1980 until the spring of 1984. He died on May 31, 1984, shortly after the project was completed.

The Bottle Houses remain open in Prince Edward Island

Today, the Bottle Houses and Gardens stand at 6891 Route 11 in Cap-Egmont along Prince Edward Island's North Cape Coastal Drive.

The attraction includes the original Six Gabled House, tavern and chapel, along with gardens, bottle art and a replica of the lighthouse where Arsenault once worked.

Tourism Prince Edward Island describes the attraction as a group of life-size buildings made from approximately 25,000 recycled glass bottles. The site operates seasonally, with dates and hours varying according to its annual schedule.

What began with a postcard in 1979 became a remarkable piece of Canadian history and Prince Edward Island heritage. Arsenault's Bottle Houses remain a striking reminder of how an ordinary collection of discarded bottles, combined with patience and imagination, can become something extraordinary.
