Navi Mumbai :- The Navi Mumbai District Level School Sports Competition 2023-24 has officially commenced, bringing together thousands of young athletes from over 260 schools within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area. This exciting event, held in association with Zilla Parishad Thane and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Sports and Cultural Affairs Department under the Directorate of Sports and Youth Services, promises to be a celebration of talent and sportsmanship.
Commissioner Mr. Rajesh Narvekar, speaking at the launch of the event, expressed his delight at Navi Mumbai achieving district status in school sports. He emphasized that this recognition allows students to showcase their skills not only at the district level but also at the division and state levels. The event was graced by Additional Commissioner Shri Vijayakumar Mhasal, Deputy Commissioner of Sports and Cultural Affairs Department Shri. Lalita Babar, District Level Sports Committee Member Shri. Purushottam Pujari, and other dignitaries.
The Navi Mumbai district level school sports competition, which commenced in 2009, has witnessed exponential growth. With more than 30,000 students participating across 46 sports, this competition reflects the flourishing sports environment in Navi Mumbai. Commissioner Narvekar expressed his satisfaction at seeing local students playing at the prestigious Yashwantrao Chavan Football Stadium.
The Deputy Commissioner of Sports and Cultural Affairs Department, Shri. Lalita Babar, who herself earned recognition on the international stage as an Olympian, expressed her belief that Navi Mumbai’s sports sector will gain momentum under her leadership. The commissioner urged her to explore opportunities for the municipal corporation’s involvement in sports development.
This year’s district level school sports competition begins with football, featuring 126 boys’ and 78 girls’ teams, including five schools from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. The tournament commenced with an exhilarating under-14 football match between Anchorwala School and St. Mary’s School, symbolizing the launch of the competition.
The children’s joy in playing on an international-standard football ground was evident on their faces as the event kicked off with enthusiasm. As this competition unfolds, Navi Mumbai can look forward to witnessing exceptional athletic talents emerge and flourish on the sports stage.
