Russia plague scare: US lawmaker invokes Ukraine bio labs after Irkutsk lab death; worker had broken test tube. Are Americans at risk?
Synopsis
Pneumonic plague Russia: Russia's Irkutsk plague scare has sparked fresh questions after a laboratory worker died from pneumonia of unknown origin and more than 200 people were reportedly placed under isolation. A US lawmaker has also invoked longstanding Russian claims about Ukraine's alleged “bio labs,” while American officials monitor the situation. Here's what we know about the suspected case and whether Americans could be at risk.

The 28-year-old lab technician Darya Shipilova, died yesterday after breaking a test tube with live Yersinia pestis the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute on September 25th
In Russia, a woman who worked for a plague research institute near Irkutsk in Siberia had told her colleagues she had accidentally broken a test tube with live bacteria when she was collecting samples for testing. The researcher, a 28-year-old female laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia, in the town of Shelekhov, died after being diagnosed with a pneumonia of “unknown” origin, according to Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian agency that handles infectious disease. More than 200 people are reportedly in isolation after the Russian laboratory worker dedicated to studying the plague and other infectious diseases died of an undisclosed illness. Russia's authorities have not confirmed that the plague was the cause of death.

Russia Irkutsk plague: Are Americans in danger?
The US is keeping an eye on reports of a suspected case of pneumonic plague in Russia. According to Al Jazeera, the US State Department said said Washington was “monitoring the situation closely with the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and our other interagency partners”. “We encourage Russian authorities to share accurate information quickly and openly,” the State Department official said in the statement.
The White House is also monitoring the plague outbreak in Russia. An official with the Trump administration told Axios on Sunday that the administration is 'aware, monitoring the outbreak, and assessing options.' The State Department urged Russian authorities to "share accurate information quickly and openly," while noting that plague is treatable with commonly available antibiotics, particularly when treatment begins early.

A US Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson also confirmed that the CDC was working with the State Department, and the White House is also monitoring developments and Russia's quarantine measures.
Senior officials in President Donald Trump's administration told reporters that the government is aware of the reports and is considering possible responses, reports Radio Free Europe.
Russia plague: Will there be travel restrictions?
There are currently no direct commercial flights between the United States and Russia, and Washington has not announced any additional travel restrictions over the suspected case. The reports of outbreak of plague in Irkutsk have prompted concern among some US lawmakers and former officials, including over Russia's history of biological-weapons research.

Republican Representative Don Bacon, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, spoke of longstanding Russian allegations that US-supported laboratories in Ukraine were involved in biological-weapons research.
"I remember hearing from anti-Ukraine voices about their so-called bio labs. It was Russian disinformation ops at their best. But in reality it is Russia with the bio labs," Bacon wrote on social media. Russia has long accused Washington and Kyiv of running biological-weapons facilities in Ukraine. Ukraine and US have rejected these allegations and independent investigations have found no evidence to support.
In April 2025, in a report on compliance with arms control commitments, the State Department said the United States "assesses that Russia maintains an offensive biological warfare program and is in violation of its obligations" under the Biological Weapons Convention. Russia denied the allegations and said
such facilities are aimed at developing defenses against pathogens. There is no public evidence that the Irkutsk laboratory involved in the current incident was developing plague as a weapon or that the worker's death was connected to an offensive biological-weapons program.
What is Pneumonic plague and how is it caused?
Pneumonic plague is one of three types of plague caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It is transferred as a result of breathing in airborne droplets from another person. According to Daily Mail, Pneumonic plague causes a severe lung infection, with symptoms including fever, shortness of breath and coughing up blood, which typically begin to show between three and seven days after contact.
Deaths from pneumonic plague drop to around 17 percent if treated with antibiotics within the first 24 hours of infection. However, the disease is almost always fatal if left untreated. There have also been claims that Russian authorities are attempting to hide exactly what happened. Reports claim that drugs used to treat the disease are running out in the region, leaving terrified residents piling into pharmacies and medical facilities demanding supplies.
