Probe into TVK MLA driving government bus without valid licence during launch of scheme

The Transport Department will conduct an inquiry into an incident of the TVK MLA for K.V. Kuppam Assembly constituency, E. Thendral Kumar, was seen driving a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus at the new terminus, during the launch of the ‘Vettri Payanam’ scheme.

The action comes in the wake of public outcry after a video that was circulated in social media. The video showed Mr. Kumar driving the government bus with around 30 commuters after the launch of the scheme by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at Koyambedu bus terminus in Chennai on Friday. “As per norms, only those drivers, who have a license to drive heavy vehicles with a badge, are eligible to drive heavy vehicles like buses. A probe will be conducted,” said a transport official.

Collector P.S. Leela Alex flagged off the buses at the terminus as part of the launch of the scheme, which expands no-fare bus travel for women and transgender persons in the State, in the presence of Vellore Corporation Commissioner A. Catherine Saranya, TVK MLA Mr. Kumar, TNSTC, and transport officials.

“It was scary as the bus that was driven by MLA Mr. Kumar was moving faster on the premises where many commuters, including women and children were waiting to board buses,” said a commuter.

Initial inquiry revealed after the flagging off of the buses by the District Collector, Mr. Kumar volunteered to drive the vehicle on the open portico of the terminus from the main entrance to a distance of around 100 metres. In the video, he was reportedly seen holding an enquiring about operating gear with the bus driver.

Transport officials said that as per norms, license holders of light vehicles were eligible to drive only cars, maxi cabs, vans, and tractors. Only those persons, who have a licence for light vehicles, can apply for a badge and a licence to drive heavy vehicles such as buses, trucks, and lorries. “In this incident, Mr. Kumar might not have the required licence and badge to drive heavy vehicles like buses. As a result, the violation will attract a penalty,” said a transport official.

As per norms, such violation by the driver will attract a fine of ₹5,000 under Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), 1988. A fine of ₹10,000 will be imposed on the owner of the vehicle. Transport officials said that based on the findings of the probe, necessary action will be taken.
