Nobel Prize Medicine 2026: Scientists found a 'light switch' inside algae & turned it into a tool to control brain cells; what this discovery means
Synopsis
Nobel Prize Medicine 2026: The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their discoveries involving light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. Their work showed how light-sensitive proteins can be used to control nerve-cell activity, opening new ways to study the brain and its neural circuits.

American Deisseroth and Germans Hegemann and Nagel win 2026 Nobel medicine prize
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth of the US and Germany's Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their work on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. The announcement was made at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm on Monday, marking the first Nobel Prize announcement of the 2026 Nobel week. The research recognised this year has transformed how scientists can study nerve cells by using light to control their activity.
Optogenetics "makes it possible to switch on, or off, the activity of individual nerve cells in a living brain," the prize-givers said.
"This method is now being used in laboratories around the world to reveal the brain’s mysteries."
Nobel Prize Medicine 2026: What did the scientists discover?
The story behind this year's prize begins with a tiny, single-celled organism, an alga. Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel studied Chlamydomonas, a single-celled alga that can move towards a light source. Their research led to the discovery of channelrhodopsin, a light-sensitive protein located on the surface of the cell.
When blue light hits the protein, a channel opens and allows charged particles called ions to pass through the cell membrane. This produces an electrical signal.
The researchers also found that the protein could make other cells respond to light when it was introduced into them.
How Karl Deisseroth turned light into a tool for controlling neurons
Karl Deisseroth took the discovery a step further by adapting channelrhodopsin for use in nerve cells.
In experiments on rat neurons, Deisseroth introduced the gene responsible for channelrhodopsin into the cells. When he exposed them to blue light, the neurons generated a nerve signal.
He published this breakthrough in 2005. By 2007, his team had demonstrated that the light-controlled system could also work in the brains of living mice.
This laid the foundation for optogenetics, a technique that allows researchers to activate or inhibit specific nerve cells using light. The approach has become an important tool in neuroscience for studying how brain circuits work.
What is optogenetics and why is it important?
In simple terms, optogenetics combines genetics with light. Scientists can introduce light-sensitive proteins into selected cells and then use light to control their activity. This gives researchers much more precise control over individual groups of neurons than many conventional approaches.
The technique has opened new ways of investigating brain activity, neural circuits and behaviour. Researchers have also explored its potential for understanding neurological and psychiatric conditions.
Why channelrhodopsin was a major breakthrough
Before these discoveries, scientists could observe electrical activity in nerve cells but had far less precise control over individual neurons.
Channelrhodopsin provided a way to link light with electrical activity inside cells. Hegemann and Nagel's work showed how a protein from algae could make cells light-sensitive, while Deisseroth's research demonstrated how the approach could be applied to neurons.
Together, these discoveries helped turn optogenetics into a powerful research method in modern neuroscience.
Who are the 2026 Nobel Medicine laureates?
— NobelPrize (@NobelPrize)
Karl Deisseroth
Karl Alexander Deisseroth, 54, is an American scientist and physician at Stanford University. He is the D.H. Chen Foundation Professor of Bioengineering and also a professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences. His research has focused on optogenetics and using light to control the activity of nerve cells.
Peter Hegemann
Peter Hegemann, 71, is a German biophysicist and professor of Experimental Biophysics at Humboldt University of Berlin. He is known for his work on channelrhodopsin, a light-sensitive protein found in certain single-celled organisms. His research helped establish the scientific foundation for optogenetics. Hegemann has also received several major scientific honours, including the Rumford Prize, the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine and the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research.
Georg Nagel
Georg Nagel, 73, is a German biophysicist and professor of Neurophysiology at the University of Würzburg. His research focuses on microbial photoreceptors and the development of tools used in optogenetics. Nagel worked with Hegemann on the study of light-sensitive proteins, including channelrhodopsin, which became central to the development of techniques for controlling neuronal activity using light.
Why did they win the Nobel Prize?
Deisseroth, Hegemann and Nagel were awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. Their combined work helped scientists develop a way to use light to control specific nerve cells, providing a powerful tool for studying how the brain works.
Nobel Prize 2026 prize money
The Nobel Prize awarded this year carries a prize amount of 12 million Swedish kronor, according to the information provided for the 2026 awards.
The amount is shared if there is more than one laureate receiving a prize.
What comes after the Nobel Medicine Prize?
The Medicine prize traditionally opens Nobel Prize week. The 2026 announcements will be followed by the Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday, Chemistry on Wednesday and Literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize is scheduled for Friday, followed by the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel on October 12.
