Will bring laws against love, land jihad in 6 months, implement UCC like U'khand, Gujarat: WB CM

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday said his government would introduce stringent laws against what he termed “love jihad” and “land jihad” within six months, while also implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state on the lines of Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Addressing an event to mark the birth centenary of former Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) president Ashok Singhal, Adhikari said the BJP government would function within the framework of the Constitution but would not tolerate attacks on Indian culture, Sanatani traditions, temples, monasteries and heritage.

Suvendu Adhikari promises ‘love jihad’, ‘land jihad’ laws in six months

Adhikari told the gathering that the government would bring in stringent legislation against “love jihad” and “land jihad” within six months. “Give us six months, we will also bring stringent laws against love and land jihad,” he said.

He also urged people to remain united and vigilant against what he described as “divisive forces”, while asserting that the government would not permit any “anti-national activity” in the state.

West Bengal to follow Uttarakhand, Gujarat on Uniform Civil Code

On the Uniform Civil Code, Adhikari said West Bengal would follow the example of Uttarakhand and Gujarat and implement a UCC in the state.

The West Bengal government has constituted a high-level committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to examine a draft UCC for the state.

According to a government notification, the proposed West Bengal UCC Bill seeks to standardise civil laws across communities on issues including marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.

The UCC was among the BJP’s key promises in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Adhikari says government will protect temples, traditions

Adhikari said the government would work in accordance with the Constitution but would not allow attacks on Indian culture, Sanatani traditions, temples, monasteries or the state’s heritage.

“This government will not allow any anti-national activity here,” he said, while referring to the traditions and teachings associated with spiritual figures such as Swami Vivekananda and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Rs 1,000 crore religious tourism circuit planned

Speaking about the proposed religious tourism circuit, Adhikari said the project would be completed within two years, with Rs 1,000 crore earmarked for it.

He sought suggestions and cooperation from the public for the project.

    Adhikari attacks previous TMC government

Taking aim at the previous TMC dispensation, Adhikari said there were several reasons for its downfall, but alleged that repeated instances of “hurt” to Hindu sentiments, organisations, deities and traditions were among the foremost.

“People tolerated those for a long time and then bid the party farewell,” he said.

Hanuman Chalisa, mass Gita recital among upcoming events

Recalling his involvement as a volunteer in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement during his student days, Adhikari said that as Leader of the Opposition from 2021 to 2026, he had protested against alleged atrocities on Hindus in West Bengal.

He also announced a series of upcoming events, including a Hanuman Chalisa recital by 20,000 people at Netaji Indoor Stadium in November and a mass Gita recital involving 10 lakh people on December 29.

Adhikari further said preparations had begun for next year’s Gangasagar Mela, with plans to provide facilities of international standards.
