17-year-old Kumkum Mohod used a second-hand bow to win Archery World Cup, now she has won India's first individual recurve gold at the Asian Games; Who is she?

A 3000 rupee wooden bow, bought with money her grandmother gave her, is where this story begins. Eight years later, that same girl stood on top of the podium in Japan, an Asian Games gold medal around her neck, the first Indian woman ever to win an individual medal in recurve archery.

Her name is Kumkum Anil Mohod. She is 17 years old, she comes from Gosavi Colony in Amravati.

    Who Is Kumkum Mohod?

Kumkum Mohod is a teenage archer from Amravati in Maharashtra. Her father, Anil Manohar Mohod, makes cardboard boxes for sweet shops to run the household. Her mother, Rupali, is the one who first pushed her toward archery, and it was her grandmother who paid for her very first bow.

She took up the sport in 2018. Just six months in, she won silver at the sub-junior nationals, an early sign that something special was taking shape.

How Did She Start Archery With Just A Wooden Bow?

There was no fancy academy, no expensive gear, not in the beginning. Kumkum trained with whatever the family could put together, starting with that 3000 rupee wooden bow.

When the Covid years shut down normal training, she and her coach, Prafull Dange, did not stop. They worked on short-distance shooting drills instead, building her strength and sharpening her technique one session at a time.

Even her more recent wins came on modest equipment. The bow she used to win recurve team gold at World Cup Stage 2 in Shanghai this year was second hand, already five years old by the time she picked up that medal.

What Did Her Family Sacrifice For Her Career?

As Kumkum's archery career grew, so did the costs, travel, equipment, tournament fees. The family's income could not always keep up.

Through it all, her father found a way. When the family could not afford an auto, he took Kumkum to competitions on his own two-wheeler. Her mother kept encouraging her. Her coach kept showing up. None of it was easy, and none of it stopped her.

How Did She Win Asian Games Gold?

Kumkum arrived in Japan already in red hot form. She first won recurve team gold with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma, beating South Korea 5-3. A day later, she added mixed team silver alongside Dhiraj Bommadevara.

Then came the individual event. She beat Olympic and world champion Kang Chaeyoung in the quarterfinal, then a world championship silver medallist in the semifinal, to reach the final against South Korea's Oh Yejin.

The final went the distance, tied 5-5 after five sets, forcing a shoot-off. Oh shot an 8. Kumkum held her nerve and shot a perfect 10. That single arrow made her an Asian Games champion.

Why Does This Medal Matter For Indian Archery?

India had won only one individual recurve medal at the Asian Games before this, Tarundeep Rai's silver back in 2010. No Indian woman had ever stood on that individual podium. Kumkum Mohod has now done both, breaking new ground in a discipline where India has long chased South Korea and China.

For a family that once struggled to afford a bow, and later an auto ride to a tournament, that gold medal from Japan carries a weight far beyond the scoreboard.
