Jeff Bezos' ex-wife MacKenzie Scott gave $30 million to Silicon Valley housing group; here’s how her mega donation could help create affordable homes across the Bay Area
    Synopsis

MacKenzie Scott has made headlines by donating $30 million to Housing Trust Silicon Valley, a game-changing support for the nonprofit. This significant contribution aims to tackle the alarming affordable housing issue in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the next ten years, Housing Trust will leverage this funding for various community initiatives, continuing Scott's long-standing commitment to enhancing housing access, with her total philanthropy surpassing $19 billion recently.

With the MacKenzie Scott donation, the step marked a milestone in Housing Trust’s 25-year history and set the stage for a decade of deeper community impact.

In 2024, Jeff Bezos' ex-wife and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $30 million to Housing Trust Silicon Valley through her Yield Giving fund. The MacKenzie Scott $30 million donation provided the largest individual gift in the nonprofit’s history.

The gift allowed the nonprofit community loan fund to accelerate its work to address the affordable housing crisis throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area, one of the most expensive housing markets in the United States. With the MacKenzie Scott donation, the step marked a milestone in Housing Trust’s 25-year history and sets the stage for a decade of deeper community impact.

How MacKenzie Scott's donation helped create affordable homes

While announcing the MacKenzie Scott $30 million donation, Noni Ramos, CEO of Housing Trust Silicon Valley, stated that the funding would help the organisation accelerate efforts to create more equitable and affordable communities.

“This gift allows us to take bold steps at a critical moment,” said Noni Ramos, CEO of Housing Trust Silicon Valley. “It shows real trust in our ability to deliver and with that comes the responsibility and freedom to accelerate and scale what’s working, take calculated risks on new ideas, and grow our reach so more of our neighbors can find the stability of a home.”

“We’re humbled and extraordinarily grateful,” Noni Ramos said, appreciating MacKenzie Scott's effort. “It really affirms the work of Housing Trust. It affirms the last 25 years of being in existence as an organization. We stand on the shoulders of the folks who founded and created the organization—past leadership at both the staff and board levels. And, it also speaks volumes to what our current team is doing.”

How Housing Trust plans to use MacKenzie Scott's $30 million

Housing Trust also designed a plan with five major initiatives, a roadmap to direct the $30 million MacKenzie Scott donation over the next decade toward greater housing opportunity and organizational strength:

Lending Capital & New Products – Expanding the organization’s core revolving loan fund and piloting new tools to meet developers’ changing needs. More details on this initiative will be shared at Housing Trust’s Investor Briefing on October 15th.

Homeownership Expansion – Beginning in 2026, Housing Trust will extend its first-time homebuyer programs to reach more households across a wider geography.

Policy & Partnerships – Hiring new staff in the coming months to strengthen advocacy and cross-sector collaboration that can unlock more resources and affordable housing opportunities.

Impact Measurement & Management – Launching a new framework in early 2026 to better track, evaluate, and communicate results for residents, communities, and the region.

Innovation Investments – Supporting mission-driven housing innovations that can reduce costs, shorten development timelines, and increase affordability.

MacKenzie Scott's donation was largest individual gift received

MacKenzie Scott’s donation, the largest gift that the Housing Trust has received from an individual, came as a surprise, according to Ramos.

Housing Trust's $30 million gift from MacKenzie Scott was not an isolated act of generosity

Yield Giving often conducts “quiet research to identify candidate organizations working to advance the opportunities of people in underserved communities,” according to its website. It’s also notable that the funding is not restricted, so recipients can use the funds however they choose.

In September 2024, CSH (Corporation for Supportive Housing) announced that it received a $40 million grant from Scott that will support its “mission to build equitable, inclusive, and thriving communities through affordable housing and essential support services.”

“This donation arrives at a pivotal moment as communities across the country grapple with escalating homelessness and housing insecurity due to a severe shortage of affordable housing, racial disparities, and persistently inadequate funding for essential health and community services,” says Deborah De Santis, CSH president and CEO.

MacKenzie Scott's Yield Giving has supported housing groups

Scott’s Yield Giving has supported a number of housing organizations in recent years, with Housing Trust being the latest.

“We see this gift as being additive to the work that we’re doing,” Ramos tells Affordable Housing Finance.

The MacKenzie Scott donation to Housing Trust Silicon Valley therefore forms part of a wider pattern of philanthropic support for affordable housing and organizations working with communities facing housing insecurity.

MacKenzie Scott and her donation history

Housing Trust's $30 million gift from MacKenzie Scott was not an isolated act of generosity. MacKenzie Scott gave around $2 billion to nearly 200 organisations in 2024, with much of her philanthropy focused on economic security, affordable housing, job stability, child development and healthcare.

Her total giving over five years has crossed $19 billion. Housing has remained one of the recurring areas of her philanthropy, with Housing Trust Silicon Valley among the prominent organisations to receive her support.

She gifted her Beverly Hills estate, worth $55 million, to support the nonprofit California Community Foundation, and their affordable housing grantmaking and immigrant integration program. In March, Scott donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanity. Scott has donated nearly $2 billion to over 300 organizations.

Previously, the philanthropist donated $2.7 billion to 286 underfunded organizations that fight against wealth inequality. And in December 2020, Scott and a "team of advisors" donated $4.2 billion to organizations across the U.S. that helped with relief during the COVID-19 pandemic.
