Eight organisations from different parts of the world have come together to form the Global Alliance for Diabetic Foot Survival and Limb Preservation. This was announced at the Diabetic Foot Society of India’s (DFSI) national conference held in Bengaluru on Friday, October 2, 2026. The founding organisations also signed a joint declaration calling for diabetic foot ulceration to be recognised as a global public health priority.

The eight organisations are the DFSI, King’s College London, the International Association of Diabetic Foot Surgeons, D-Foot International, the Pan African Diabetic Foot Study Group, the American Limb Preservation Society, the International Federation of Podiatrists and the Podiatric Surgeons’ Society.

A 2023 review cited in the alliance proposal estimated that about 18.6 million people worldwide are affected by diabetic foot ulceration annually. It reported a five-year mortality of about 30% following a diabetic foot ulcer and over 70% following a major amputation.

The proposed alliance will focus on research, workforce training, comparable data collection and advocacy with the World Health Organization and national governments to secure greater policy recognition of diabetic foot disease.

The proposed framework also emphasises the involvement of people living with diabetes, those who have experienced foot ulcers and people living with amputation or disability in decision-making and programme design. It envisages regional demonstration programmes, a common measurement framework and an annual report on progress.

The DFSI Scientific Committee is proposed as the alliance’s interim secretariat, with a governing council representing the founding organisations overseeing strategy, finances and activities. The members are expected to meet within 30 days to discuss governance, collaboration, resource mobilisation and implementation.
