Want the latest iPhone without buying it? India’s smartphone subscription bet grows
    Synopsis

Subscription-led models for premium smartphones are beginning to gain traction in India as buyers look to lower upfront costs and upgrade devices more frequently. While EMI and trade-in programmes still dominate, services offering monthly access to iPhones, Pixels and Galaxy devices are growing, particularly among consumers in the ₹1 lakh-plus segment.

Mumbai: This festive season, consumers chasing the latest iPhone or a high-end gadget have a new way to get it – subscribe, rather than buy. Subscription-led models for premium smartphones and durables are beginning to gain traction, offering access to expensive products for a fixed monthly payment and, in some cases, the flexibility to upgrade, return or eventually buy them.

The proposition gains ground as consumers, particularly at the premium end, increasingly look at the cost of staying on the latest device rather than the price of owning it outright.

"Our subscription business is growing 20-30% month on month, and subscriptions account for 95% of our users. Demand is driven by iPhones, Google Pixels and Samsung Galaxy smartphones," said Jayant Jha, founder of BytePe.

The appeal, Jha said, lies in lowering upfront cost while giving flexibility to upgrade without the hassle of selling an old device. "The opportunity is to make premium technology accessible without requiring customers to pay the full device price upfront," he said.

Premium buyers increasingly view smartphones as products to be upgraded rather than owned for several years. "Consumers in the ultra-premium segment (₹1 lakh-plus) are upgrading every 12-24 months," said Sreevathsa Prabhakar, founder and CEO of Servify.

Instead of focusing only on the sticker price, consumers are increasingly looking at the monthly cost of staying on the latest device, Prabhakar said. Better cameras, AI features and foldable form factors are providing reasons to upgrade, while trade-ins and buybacks can lower the effective cost.

This is also where financing is beginning to play a role in the broader shift. For a device such as Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, priced at ₹1.99 lakh, an assured buyback can reduce the effective ownership cost.

    User-friendly Options

"EMI spreads the cost, trade-in reduces the upfront payment, and assured buyback reduces the overall cost of ownership. Together, they make premium devices much more accessible," Prabhakar said.

No-cost equated monthly instalment (EMI) tenures, which were earlier typically nine to 12 months, have now stretched to as much as 24 months, he said. When combined with assured buyback, consumers get a predictable payment structure along with an upgrade or exit route. While assured buyback by itself is not a subscription, the combination begins to resemble an access-led proposition.

Newer upgrade programmes are building on this overlap between financing and subscription. Programmes such as Samsung's Galaxy Forever and Google's Pixel Upgrade Program combine financing with assured buyback and easier upgrades at the ultra-premium end, said Shubham Singh, research analyst at Counterpoint Research.

However, the subscription market itself remains at an early stage in the country.

Singh said, "Subscription- or rental-led smartphone ownership is still at a very early stage in India." Adoption will depend on competitive monthly costs, attractive buyback values and seamless availability across online and offline channels, he added.

The timing is significant as the festive season approaches. India's smartphone festive-season sales are estimated to fall around 12% on-year in 2026, primarily because higher device prices have limited the scope for aggressive discounts and promotions, Singh said. The premium segment, however, is expected to remain an important demand driver.

Prabhakar expects upgrades to play a larger role in smartphone demand. Servify handles more than 300,000 trade-ins a year and is seeing growth beyond metros, including tier II-III cities, he said. Trade-in volumes in October-November are typically about 50% higher than in an average month.

The ₹60,000-₹1 lakh segment is seeing traction as financing and trade-ins make monthly payments more manageable. Above ₹1 lakh, including foldables, existing premium users are increasingly driving upgrades.

For Jha, subscription does not necessarily mean persuading consumers to give up ownership. "Access does not have to replace buying, it offers another way to use premium technology. The real test is whether the convenience, flexibility and total cost make sense for the customer," he said.

For now, EMI and financing remain the primary routes to premium purchases. But as flagship devices become costlier and consumers upgrade more frequently, subscription-led models are beginning to offer another way to pay for staying current , even if the market for such models is still finding its feet.
