Legal representatives for Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike confirmed on Thursday that she remains in critical condition and is receiving emergency medical intervention following her unsuccessful execution attempt.
Pike was transferred to a medical facility Wednesday evening after Tennessee terminated her execution procedure when two consecutive applications of its lethal injection protocol proved ineffective. Witnesses from the media present at the execution were instructed to vacate the premises while Pike could still be heard “snoring.”

Her legal representatives are petitioning the court to halt the execution proceedings while requesting a comprehensive examination of Pike's childhood experiences, including documented instances of sexual abuse and neglect.
Randy Spivey, one of Pike's attorneys, said on Thursday, “Last night was not just inefficient, it was cruel, and it was torturous. It was also predictable,” Tennessee Lookout reported.
He said that they had previously cautioned against precisely this result, yet the court disregarded their warnings. He further emphasized that Pike has endured immense suffering throughout her life—from childhood trauma, solitary confinement in jail, and now the traumatic experience of a failed execution—exceeding what any individual should reasonably be subjected to.
“What she has endured over the past 30 years is in a class of its own,” Spivey stated. “This should not happen again … the governor must commute her sentence now.”
Governor Bill Lee halts all 2026 executions
Governor Bill Lee and the US Supreme Court declined to grant her a reprieve this week before the execution proceeding.
Following the unsuccessful execution on Wednesday, Lee declared his intention to commission an independent inquiry and suspend all executions through the remainder of 2026. However, he refrained from issuing any statement regarding Pike's sentencing. Lee is subject to term limits and will depart from office in January.
“This is a tragedy. There is no one who wanted what happened last night to happen. It's deeply disturbing to me that this has happened in this state,” the Governor said.
According to Yahoo News, her another lawyer Stephen Ferrell said, “She was not seeking to delay her execution. She was seeking to have that execution performed humanely and as quickly and as painlessly as possible.”
Spivey said that the execution team made multiple attempts to establish an intravenous line, taking more than sixty minutes to complete the procedure. He saw that at least seven needles were inserted into her left arm during this extended process, and he noted that one needle appeared to be bent when it was withdrawn following an unsuccessful placement attempt.
Christa Pike death sentence
Pike received a death sentence in 1996 following her conviction for the first-degree murder of Slemmer, which occurred the previous year on the University of Tennessee Agricultural campus.
According to legal documents submitted to the Supreme Court, Pike "tortured and killed Colleen Slemmer" on January 12, 1995, stating that Pike "just felt mean that day." Pike allegedly severed Colleen's throat on multiple occasions and fractured her skull using a piece of asphalt.
Pike was additionally convicted of attempted first-degree murder for her actions in 2001 when she attempted to strangle fellow inmate Patricia Jones.
