The K.H. Patil Institute of Medical Sciences (KHPIMS), Gadag, recently conducted a workshop on multi-organ retrieval and kidney bench preparation using soft-embalmed cadavers.

The workshop, organised by the Department of Anatomy in association with the Karnataka Urology Association (KUA), on October 2, was part of the KUACON 2026 pre-conference workshop on ‘Renal Transplantation and Dialysis Access’, KHPIMS said in a release.

According to the institute, the workshop was the first of its kind to be conducted using soft-embalmed cadavers in a government medical college in Karnataka. The technique provided participants with hands-on training in procedures associated with organ retrieval and transplantation.

The scientific programme covered cadaveric multi-organ retrieval, with emphasis on kidney retrieval and bench preparation. It also included sessions on vascular anastomosis, ultrasonographic mapping for arteriovenous fistula creation, transplant kidney Doppler and angioplasty.

Urologists, transplant surgeons and faculty members conducted demonstrations and practical training sessions for the participants.

The institute said the workshop aimed to strengthen cadaveric surgical training and to bridge the gap between anatomical knowledge and advanced surgical practice. It plans to organise more interdisciplinary cadaveric workshops in collaboration with professional associations.

The institute acknowledged the contribution of the body donors and their families, whose consent made the cadaveric training possible and also KHPIMS Director Basavaraj P. Bommanhalli.
