Bengaluru to get nine new townships, 300-km metro line, 210-km ring road and RRTS network in the next 10-year plan. Where will they come up?
Synopsis
Karnataka plans to construct nine new integrated industrial townships, 312 km of new Metro lines, a 210-km ring road and a 270-km RRTS network across Bengaluru Metropolitan Region over the next decade. The government has already acquired 7,900 acresfor the proposed townships.
AgenciesBengaluru to get nine industrial townships, new Metro lines, a 210-km ring road and 270-km RRTS network as Karnataka plans major BMR expansion.
The Bengaluru Metropolitan Region (BMR) is set for a major infrastructure expansion, with the Karnataka government planning nine integrated industrial townships, new housing and wider water and sewage networks over the next 10 years. The plan also includes 312 km of additional Metro lines, a 210-km ring road and a 270-km Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) network, a report stated. Chief Minister DK Shivakumar outlined the plans while chairing a meeting of the advisory committee on BMR’s economic development on Monday. The infrastructure push is part of Karnataka’s broader target of taking the state economy to $1 trillion by 2047.
Nine industrial townships planned in Bengaluru
The state government has already acquired 7,900 acres for the proposed integrated industrial townships. Acquisition of another 5,600 acres is currently under way. The government also plans to develop facilities focused on artificial intelligence. Shivakumar said officials have been asked to identify suitable land for an AI university and an AI city.
“I’ve instructed officials to identify suitable land for setting up an AI university and AI city, which we want to develop along the lines of Singapore’s Punggol,” Shivakumar said. Punggol was earlier a fishing and farming village and is now described as Singapore’s first modern smart and sustainable eco-town.
Bengaluru's New Proposed industrial townships
However, the October 5 announcement does not identify all nine locations individually. There is an existing township plan that gives an indication of where the government's decentralisation strategy is heading:
- Bidadi-Harohalli: The Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township is the most developed proposal. It is along the Bengaluru-Mysuru corridor, around 35–40 km from Bengaluru. The project has been planned as a large mixed-use township with housing, industries, offices and public infrastructure.
- Devanahalli
- Nelamangala
- Hoskote
- Doddaballapur
- Magadi
- Bidadi
These locations had previously been identified for satellite-township development, with road and rail connectivity to Bengaluru.
More Metro and RRTS connectivity
The infrastructure plan also focuses on Bengaluru’s transport network as the region deals with frequent traffic congestion. The government is considering 312 km of additional Metro lines, a 210-km ring road and a 270-km RRTS network. The plan also includes expanding suburban rail connectivity across the region.
“The 210-km ring road will link 10 additional hubs and connect Phase II of Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) with NICE Road. The RRTS will connect Bengaluru with neighbouring districts such as Tumakuru, Mysuru and KGF,” CM said.
The proposed RRTS network is expected to extend Bengaluru’s connectivity with neighbouring districts, while the new ring road will link additional hubs around the metropolitan region.
What exactly is the proposed RRTS?
The government has proposed a 270-km RRTS network comprising three broad corridors:
| Proposed corridor | Broad connection |
| Bengaluru–Tumakuru | Bengaluru → Tumakuru |
| Bengaluru–Mysuru | Bengaluru → Mysuru |
| Bengaluru–KGF | Bengaluru → Kolar Gold Fields |
The three corridors together are proposed to cover about 270 km.
West/Northwest: Bengaluru–Tumakuru
Southwest: Bengaluru–Mysuru
East: Bengaluru–KGF/Kolar
This is still a proposal, not an approved operational RRTS system. The reports available from the October 5 meeting do not provide the exact alignment, stations, construction timeline or individual corridor lengths.
Water and sewage networks to expand
The government is also looking to extend basic infrastructure beyond the areas currently served by existing networks. Bengaluru development minister Krishna Byre Gowda said the entire Bengaluru Urban district will eventually come under the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).
The move is expected to help expand water distribution and sewage networks to areas that are currently outside the existing service coverage. The combined plans point to a wider development strategy for the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region, with industrial townships, housing, transport and civic infrastructure planned alongside the expansion of the city’s economic base.
