Assam bamboo jewellery wins hearts at Tefla nat’l conference

By Sohail Khan 2 October 2026, 1:01 pm

Sustainable bamboo jewellery handcrafted by rural women in Assam emerged as a major attraction at Tefla's national agriculture, bioenergy and commodity conference in Mumbai. The stall, established by Guwahati journalist and entrepreneur Meghali Das under her brand Bamboo Fashion, drew delegates, policymakers and international guests. Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade were among the prominent dignitaries who inspected the collection.   Das initiated her bamboo enterprise around 2016–17 after receiving professional training. On Feb 23, 2026, she launched the Bamboo Fashion showroom and research centre in Guwahati, recognized as Northeast India's first bamboo jewellery brand. The collection spans more than 250 lightweight, chemical-free designs treated with natural polish to resist humidity and fungus. Prices range between ₹50 and ₹5,000.   Centered on rural empowerment, the enterprise has trained over 1,000 women, with a core team of 25 to 30 women producing pieces from home. Bamboo Fashion operates on a buy-back system, purchasing finished goods directly from artisans to guarantee steady livelihood. Das has also extended this training to women inmates at Guwahati Central Jail to foster financial independence.
