Claude comes closer to India’s data: Anthropic brings in-country inference to AWS
Synopsis
Anthropic has introduced in-country inference for its Claude models in India through Amazon Bedrock. This service allows sensitive AI workloads to be processed on servers located within the country. Financial institutions and large enterprises in regulated sectors can now use Claude while complying with local data-residency requirements. The introduction of this technology is expected to accelerate enterprise adoption of generative AI in India.
APAnthropic has brought in-country inference for its Claude AI models to India through Amazon Bedrock, allowing prompts and model responses sent through its India endpoint to be processed on servers located within the country.
The move is aimed at addressing data-residency requirements for regulated sectors, giving enterprises a way to keep sensitive AI workloads within India while using Anthropic’s Claude models.

In practical terms, when an Indian customer uses the India endpoint, the prompt sent to Claude and the model’s response are processed on servers in India. Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Web Services’ platform for accessing and deploying generative AI models, provides the infrastructure through which customers can access Claude locally.
Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are now available with in-country inference through Amazon Bedrock in India.
India is Anthropic’s second-largest market for Claude.ai, with software development accounting for 45.2% of work-related tasks that users bring to Claude in the country, the highest share of any market, said Irina Ghose, managing director at Anthropic India, in an interview with .
The company’s adoption in India has also spread beyond software development, with businesses across banking and payments, large enterprises, IT services, digital companies, healthcare, science and public services using Claude.
TCS is equipping 50,000 associates with Claude, while Infosys is combining the model with its Topaz platform. Cognizant uses Claude in systems it builds for clients, while LTTS is embedding the technology into its engineering platforms.
For these businesses, the ability to process AI workloads within India could be particularly important where data handling and regulatory requirements restrict how sensitive information can be processed.

"Requests sent to Claude through the India endpoint are processed on servers located within India. That is what our customers in India, especially in regulated sectors, asked us for: to use Claude on their most critical work with every request processed within the country," Ghose said.
Financial institutions, government bodies and large enterprises had sought local inference because of regulatory and data-handling requirements, she added.
The availability of local inference could also allow some deployments that had been waiting for the capability to move forward, Ghose said.
The India expansion comes as Anthropic looks to deepen its presence in a market where enterprise adoption of generative AI is widening and where data localisation and residency requirements are becoming increasingly important for large organisations.
For customers with sensitive workloads, the India endpoint provides a way to use Claude while keeping the processing of those requests within the country.
