An athlete died after suffering a medical emergency during the IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin race in Madison on Saturday, organisers confirmed in a statement following the endurance event.
IRONMAN announced the death on its official Facebook page, saying the participant experienced a medical emergency during the race. “We are deeply saddened to confirm that an athlete passed away during today's IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin event after experiencing a medical emergency,” the organisers said.
The organisation did not disclose the athlete's identity. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the athlete's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Out of respect for the family and the athlete's privacy, we will have no further comment.”
What happened at IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin?
The IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin is one of the Midwest's premier endurance events, attracting professional and amateur triathletes from across the United States and abroad, according to its website.
According to the event's official website, competitors complete a 70.3-mile (113-kilometre) course consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run through Madison. The race finishes near the Wisconsin State Capitol after passing the city's lakes and downtown streets.
The circumstances surrounding the medical emergency remain unclear.
The Madison Fire Department (MFD) received a call during the swim section of the event at approximately 7:47 am, according to WMTV. The emergency call stated that emergency medical services were required on scene.
According to MFD, UW Lake Rescue first transported the patient to the beach and started life-saving procedures. Since they had a boat on the water and were keeping an eye on athletes, they were able to transport the patient. MFD further reported that a private EMS service unit was also in the vicinity and continued to provide patient care on shore.
Medical emergencies at endurance races
Although fatalities during triathlons are uncommon, endurance races carry recognised medical risks because of prolonged physical exertion.
Medical teams are stationed throughout IRONMAN events, with ambulances, rescue personnel, and emergency response crews positioned along the course. Participants also generally undergo safety briefings before race day.
According to WMTV, Ryan Brother's Ambulance stated that they were also involved in the response prior to the arrival of MFD and verified that they have an agreement with IRONMAN to offer services on the course.
After arriving, MFD and EMS personnel took over patient care. They claim to have taken the person to the hospital, where they subsequently passed away.
