Delhi weather: IGI Airport witnesses waterlogging, airlines issue travel advisory amid IMD's red alert

Heavy rains lashed several parts of Delhi on Friday, prompting IndiGo and Air India to issue a travel advisory as bad weather impacts flight operations.

"Bad weather over Delhi has impacted flight schedules. We are closely monitoring the weather and doing our best to get you where you need to be, safely and smoothly," IndiGo said.

The airline urged passengers to check their flight status befor leaving for the airport, and allow for additional travel time, as road conditions may be slower than usual.

Flight operations to and from Delhi may be affected due to adverse weather conditions today, Air India said in a passenger advisory.

Heavy waterlogging was witnessed at Indira Gandhi International Airport after heavy rainfall.

The IGI Airport also issued a passenger advisory, warning passengers of disruptions in flight operations.

"Due to inclement weather conditions in Delhi, flight operations are impacted at Delhi Airport. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. For the latest flight information, passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines," the Delhi Airport operator GMR said.

Delhi rains: National capital faces heavy downpour

Dark clouds shrouded Delhi, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert warning of intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds later in the day.

Rain-soaked roads, umbrellas dotted the streets and people rushed for shelter as the showers intensified across the national capital.

According to the IMD's three-hourly rainfall data released on Friday, Palam recorded 3.4 mm of rain between 11.30 am and 2.30 pm, while Najafgarh received 0.5 mm between 8.30 am and 11.30 am. Most other monitoring stations recorded no rainfall during these periods.

The IMD, in its short-range weather forecast forcasted a spell of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and lightning at many places between 2.15 pm and 4.15 pm, with heavy rain at isolated places.

It also predicted another spell of light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning at most places between 5 pm and 8 pm, with heavy rain at isolated places.
