Trump says Canada treated US ‘very unfairly’, calls it ‘difficult’ to deal with

US President Donald Trump on Monday said Canada had treated the United States “very unfairly”, accusing the country of imposing tariffs of 400% or more on US farmers and taking advantage of Washington.

“The problem is that they've treated the United States very unfairly,” Trump said at a press conference.

Trump said Canada wanted a deal with the US and called Washington “all the time”, but added that Ottawa had been “very difficult to deal with”.

“They have been one of the worst countries in the entire world,” Trump said, referring to Canada.

He said about 95% of Canada’s business was conducted with the US, while the US did only a small fraction of its business with Canada.

Trump also cited US support for Canada, including military assistance and icebreakers.

“We work with them. We buy icebreakers. We have 11 of them right now under construction. They want to know if they can use icebreakers,” he said.

Trump said Canada had little that the US needed, pointing to its energy and lumber resources.

“They're not a state. There's nothing they have that we need. We have more energy than they have. We have all the lumber you could possibly use,” he said.

“We have to treat our country with respect. They have been very bad to our farmers,” Trump added.
