Taylor Sheridan was ready to quit Hollywood after Yellowstone until a $330 million Texas legend changed everything
Synopsis
Taylor Sheridan planned to retire from Hollywood afterYellowstone—until the historic 6666 Ranch went up for sale. After buying the legendary $330 million Texas property, Sheridan found himself back in overdrive, creating hit shows to help fund and preserve the iconic ranch. His planned retirement after Yellowstone therefore never quite happened.

Taylor Sheridan was ready to walk away. After building Yellowstone into a cultural titan, the writer and director had already bought a ranch in Weatherford, Texas—in cash and planned to retire from show business. His goal was to show horses, raise a small herd, and enjoy the quiet life.
Then, one of the most legendary properties in American history went on the market, and Sheridan’s retirement plans changed overnight.

The death that changed everything
Sheridan grew up in North Texas, living in what he described as the "shadow of the Four Sixes." The iconic 6666 Ranch wasn't just land, owning a horse from its stables was a ultimate status symbol.
Sheridan even used the 266,000-acre property as the real-world blueprint for the fictional Dutton Ranch, noting that Montana simply didn't have working ranches of that scale left.
When longtime owner Anne Marion, the great-granddaughter of ranch founder Samuel "Burk" Burnett—passed away in 2020 at age 81, the massive estate was put up for sale.

Taylor Sheridan recently addressed the long-running questions surrounding 6666 during an appearance on Dale Brisby's Rodeo Time podcast
Fearing the historic property would be carved up into pieces, Marion’s estate looked for a buyer who would preserve its heritage. Sheridan, who had bonded with Marion while filming Yellowstone on the property, got the call.
"And, so, the person they came up with was me," Sheridan recalled.

"I'm about 300 million short"
Taking over the historic property, which spans three massive divisions across four Texas counties, came with a staggering price tag. Listed around $330 million to $342 million, the cost far exceeded what the filmmaker had in his bank account.
When told the price, Sheridan bluntly replied, "I'm about 300 million short."
To pull off the impossible, Sheridan assembled a massive investor group, officially closing the deal in January 2022. During the pandemic production shutdown, he went into hyper-drive, writing an unprecedented amount of material and renegotiating a massive deal with Paramount Global estimated at $200 million. By selling enough scripts, he secured majority ownership in the partnership.
As Sheridan famously joked afterward, "I was real rich for 45 minutes. Then I was broke again."
Why retirement became impossible
Taking ownership of the Four Sixes wasn't just a land purchase; it was taking stewardship of a living piece of American history established in 1870. Keeping the massive cattle and Quarter Horse operations afloat required staggering financial upkeep.
"I knew that if I bought this ranch that I was not going to be quitting my day job for a while," Sheridan admitted.
Instead of stepping away from the camera, Sheridan locked himself into the television industry for the foreseeable future. To finance the ranch, he launched an entire TV empire, cranking out hits like 1883, 1923, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, Landman, and The Madison.
Sheridan openly admits that he now writes to support the land, summarizing his relentless workload with a simple truth: he does the shows for the ranch.
What started as a plan to ride off into the sunset transformed into a lifelong commitment to keep a legendary Texas institution alive.
