Beyond the weighing scale, an expert explains how rapid weight loss can affect your hair, face, and muscles.

Weight loss can often feel exciting, especially when you begin to see visible changes in your body. However, losing weight rapidly or through restrictive methods can also come with its own set of challenges. In an interview with Lifestyle, Dr Anmol Chugh, Associate Director and Head of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, explains how rapid weight loss can affect the hair, face and muscles, and what people should know while trying to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way.

    Facial fat loss

“Facial fat is one of the first things I check when a patient describes rapid weight loss,” said Dr Anmol. The face relies on a certain amount of fat in the cheeks, temples, and under the eyes to look full and rested. Lose that fat quickly, and the skin doesn't have time to adjust. What's left is skin that sags over a smaller frame, with new hollows and shadows that make people look years older than they are, even though they're technically healthier.

Dr Anmol highlighted that this is different from ordinary aging, and it's why I'm seeing more patients in their 30s and 40s asking about fillers or fat grafting who never expected to need them this early.

    Hair loss

“Hair loss is a second concern I hear about often, and it's always a surprise to patients who have lost a lot of weight quickly,” said Dr Anmol. The sudden weight loss is stressful to the system, and the body responds to this distress by putting more hairs than normal into a resting state. The shedding shows up two to three months later, which means most patients don't connect it to their weight loss at all. It's usually temporary, but it adds to a sense that something is going wrong even as the health markers improve.

    Muscle loss

“Muscle loss is the part I worry about most as a surgeon, because it affects surgical planning directly,” explained Dr Anmol. When weight drops fast, especially without resistance training, the body doesn't only burn fat—it burns lean muscle too. That changes the underlying structure I'm working with if a patient later wants body contouring. Skin that's lost its muscular support behind it drapes differently, and results are harder to predict.

“None of this means rapid weight loss is the wrong choice for someone who needs it medically. But I tell every patient the same thing: pair it with protein intake and strength training if at all possible, and don't wait years to address facial volume loss or skin laxity if it starts bothering you. Weight loss solves one problem. Managing what it does to your face, hair, and muscle needs its own plan,” advised Dr Anmol.
