Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, raised concerns about the poor condition of roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in his constituency, Raebareli, during a District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting on Wednesday (September 9, 2026). He displayed photographs of the area’s broken roads on his mobile phone and sharply questioned the District Magistrate and PWD officials.

He pointedly asked why the public faced such a predicament when sufficient funds were available for road construction and repair. The Leader of the Opposition strongly instructed officials to review the condition of the roads, identify negligent implementing agencies, and hold them directly accountable. Mr. Gandhi, who is on a two-day visit to Raebareli, attended the DISHA meeting at the collectorate along with Congress’ Amethi Lok Sabha MP Kishori Lal Sharma.

“While presiding over the meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) held at Bachat Bhawan in Raebareli, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Shri Rahul Gandhi, prominently raised the issue of bad roads and potholes in the district. During the meeting, he displayed photographs of the area’s broken roads on his mobile phone and sharply questioned the District Magistrate and PWD officials. He pointedly asked why the public faced such a predicament when sufficient funds were available for road construction and repair,” posted the U.P. Congress on X, detailing the sequence of events that transpired inside.

Local Congress leaders added, “The Leader of the Opposition strongly instructed officials to review the condition of the roads, identify negligent implementing agencies, and hold them directly accountable. In this meeting, the concerned officials assured us that they would repair the roads and potholes as soon as possible.”

Uttar Pradesh Minister Dinesh Pratap Singh criticised Gandhi’s approach, alleging that he seemed more interested in finding faults in government schemes than in reviewing their implementation. “I am astonished whether Mr. Rahul Gandhi comes to the Raebareli Disha meeting to expedite the schemes run by the Government of India for the benefit of the people of Raebareli, to ensure their timely and quality implementation, or to enhance his political image by highlighting flaws in the schemes run by the government in the public interest,” he told local reporters.
