The Andhra Pradesh BJP has criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for creating confusion in the minds of the public on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and demeaning the office of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Addressing a media conference here on Tuesday (September 29, 2026), the party’s State spokesperson Jalli Madhusudhan said the nation expected the Leader of the Opposition to behave responsibly and provide constructive suggestions to the government, but said his recent outbursts against the constitutional office of the ECI did not befit his status.

Maintaining that the SIR was a result of proposals mooted by various parties, including the regional parties, in the past to rectify anomalies in the voters’ list, Mr. Madhusudhan asked how Mr. Gandhi could oppose it now on ‘flimsy grounds’.

The spokesperson said the Congress was bent on triggering unnecessary panic in public minds on the removal of votes, when the exercise was only about cleaning up the list by removing dead and shifted voters.

“It is now clear that the Leader of the Opposition does not want the ECI to take any proactive steps to stem the rot in the system. It also gives rise to the suspicion that he wants to extend the rights enjoyed by the Indian citizens to the illegal immigrants too,” he said.

Mr. Madhusudhan said the BJP would continue to stand by the good policies initiated by constitutional bodies such as the ECI and enlighten the public on the merits of implementing the SIR.
